IBM’s product stewardship commitment

IBM makes a commitment to our retail customers to delivering store products that meet the following design and manufacturing requirements:

  • Upgradeable. Designed with common building blocks to promote parts reuse and to extend product life and perform over a long (seven year) life cycle, translating into fewer obsolete products and less disposal.
  • Reuse. Recycle. Easy repair and upgradeability of the product facilitates reuse. At the end of live, parts can be recycled in a cost effective manner.
  • Build with recycled materials. Where they are economically and technically justifiable, IBM products are manufactured with some amount of recycled plastic.
  • Save energy. IBM is building products with improved energy efficiency and/or reduced consumption of energy.
  • Minimize environmental impact. Through careful selection of environmentally preferred materials and finishes, IBM reduces the use of limited and/or harmful resources.
  • Dispose safely. At the end of product life, IBM products with dissimilar materials are separated. Hazardous materials (i.e. batteries) and plastics are labeled properly to insure correct recycling/disposal methods are used.
  • RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliant.  All RSS products meet RoHS compliance regulations in Europe, California, and China.

An environmentally friendly focus

“IBM has corporate policies of protecting the environment and conserving energy and natural resources dating back to the early 1970s.  Our focus on innovation in retail expands beyond system performance and reliability. We continue to invest in manufacturing and design processes that give our clients the tools they need to implement their own environmental policies and make it easier for them to identify and select the most environmentally friendly retail solutions available.

“The goal is to help retailers better position themselves with consumers, who increasingly value companies that are working to minimize their impact on the planet.”

—Steve Ladwig, General Manager, IBM Retail Store Solutions
