01 May 2007 — Designed to help optimize the customer experience, the new IBM SurePOS 500 Series now provides even greater technological flexibility. Specifically, select models are available with an optional 17-inch infrared (IR) touchscreen display, as well as an internal 4GB modular flash drive. Both enhancements increase the ability of the SurePOS 500 Series to deliver its innovative blend of style, serviceability and advanced technology for food service, hospitality, specialty and gas and convenience.
The 17-inch touchscreen display option provides maximum onscreen display area at its native resolution, giving retailers even more room to view multiple applications simultaneously. It is available with models 565 and 545, although the 15-inch display will remain the standard choice for both. In addition, all IR touchscreen displays for the SurePOS 500 Series now feature a sawtooth “comb” and cover that help prevent sunlight intrusion, as well as high ambient light (HAL) circuits that help improve operation in brightly lit environments. The touch controller on model 565 also now supports updatable firmware.
The new internal 4GB modular flash drive is available on all models of the IBM SurePOS 500 Series 4846 Machine Type, and helps provide a new level of data storage flexibility. It allows retailers to store transaction data separately from the hard drive, adding a layer of redundancy. The drive can also be used to store a backup version of the system configuration to promote faster recovery in the event of hard disk failure.
