MEMORANDUM TO: All IBM Production Suppliers
SUBJECT: Compliance with Product Packaging Environmental Reporting
The following information is required to be forwarded to all IBM suppliers who package/ship hardware/software/any product/tangibles on behalf of IBM internationally. All IBM Procurement buyers should ensure that their applicable suppliers have received this letter.
Please be advised that the IBM Engineering Specification 5897660 "Packaging Materials, Essential Requirements, Restricted Heavy Metals and Other Materials of Concern, Packaging Material Data Collection and Reporting" has been updated (see attachment below). In addition, specific references have been added to the reporting obligations in the GA21-9261-11b (PN 31L5345) IBM Supplier Packaging Handbook (page 11 , section 2.2). Included in the reporting obligations is an update to the requirement to report package component material types and amounts (by weight). The package types encompass any material(s) used in the package assemblies for any product contained in any IBM Customer Solution put on the market or shipped directly to a customer; for instance, data on corrugated containers, plastic packaging (foam cushions, bags), wooden pallets, etc.
In Scope: Packaging for Systems, FRUs, and Options that are consumed by Clients, including Business Partners (IBM logo and non-logo)
Out of Scope: Packaging for Components, Parts and Sub Assemblies bound for IBM or OEM production facilities
Per the IBM Specification 5897660, packaging materials data needs to be provided for existing products and for each new product released to market. This data can now be provided on-line via the Web. Please visit the IBM Global Procurement Web site for further details on how to provide this data to IBM.
The file below provides details regarding this requirement as well as a schedule for distribution of this communication and data collection.
