http://www.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/40788.wss

IBM Blue Gene/Q, the most powerful single architecture supercomputer in Poland, has been chosen by The Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modeling, University of Warsaw ICM of Poland to support the country's largest biomedical and biotechnological research initiative called, Centre for Pre-clinical Research and Technology CePT. More than 500 life sciences and biomedical researchers, physicians and students, from a consortium led by The Medical University of Warsaw WUM and consisting of three universities and seven research centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences, will use the supercomputer and its supporting e-infrastructure to gain further insight into chronic diseases.

Made in IBM Labs: Scientists Discover New Atomic Technique to Charge Memory Chips

http://www.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/40702.wss

IBM today announced a materials science breakthrough at the atomic level that could pave the way for a new class of non-volatile memory and logic chips that would use less power than today’s silicon based devices. Rather than using conventional electrical means that operate today’s semiconducting devices, IBM’s scientists discovered a new way to operate chips using tiny ionic currents, which are streams of charged atoms that could mimic the event-driven way in which the human brain operates.

President Obama Awards IBM Scientists with National Medal of Technology and Innovation for Inventing the Underlying Technology in LASIK Surgery

http://www.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/40276.wss

President Obama will honor a team of three IBM scientists -- James J. Wynne, Rangaswamy Srinivasan and Samuel Blum -- with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the country's most prestigious award given to leading innovators for technological achievement. They are receiving this award for their discovery of a new form of laser surgery, using an excimer laser that made modern LASIK and PRK refractive eye surgery possible.

IBM and The Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology Develop New Antimicrobial Hydrogel to Fight Superbugs and Drug-Resistant Biofilms

http://www.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/40188.wss

Researchers from IBM and the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology revealed today an antimicrobial hydrogel that can break through diseased biofilms and completely eradicate drug-resistant bacteria upon contact. The synthetic hydrogel, which forms spontaneously when heated to body temperature, is the first-ever to be biodegradable, biocompatible and non-toxic, making it an ideal tool to combat serious health hazards facing hospital workers, visitors and patients.

http://www.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/39641.wss

IBM announced today a major advance in the ability to use light instead of electrical signals to transmit information for future computing. The breakthrough technology – called “silicon nanophotonics” – allows the integration of different optical components side-by-side with electrical circuits on a single silicon chip using, for the first time, sub-100nm semiconductor technology.
