CELLS Speeds Development of Its New Synchrotron Facility With IBM's PLM "Asset Lifecycle Management Solution"

"Asset Lifecycle Management" Solution, Based on SMARTEAM, Implemented by Arion Data Systems, Streamlines the Development of Alba, a New Generation Synchrotron Light Facility in Spain

BARCELONA, SPAIN - 28 Apr 2005: Today, Arion Data Systems, an IBM Business Partner, announced that the Consortium for the Exploitation of the Synchrotron Light Laboratory (CELLS) has chosen IBM's PLM "Asset Life Management solution" to speed the construction process of the facilities related to the Alba project. CELLS (http://www.cells.es) is a consortium co-financed by the Spanish State and the Autonomous Government of Catalonia to develop Alba, a new generation synchrotron light research facility.

A synchrotron is a particle accelerator that boosts the velocity of electrons, protons or ionized atoms (ions) to near the speed of light. When a charged particle is accelerated, it radiates electromagnetic energy. In a synchrotron, this energy may be used for a number of experimental purposes in physics, biology, earth science or environment research. Alba is a new generation of Synchrotron which is under construction in Cerdanyola del Vallès, near Barcelona.

CELLS will use IBM's PLM "Asset Lifecycle Management" solution (ALM) based on SMARTEAM, a leading collaborative product data and lifecycle management solution, to streamline the construction of this synchroton facility. This solution will enable CELLS to avoid data and file dispersion by presenting a proper unified Information and Documentation system, as well as providing continuous and constant access to it. The solution will help the consortium integrate its heterogenous divisions, including engineering, administration and accelerators, as well as computing and experiments, in a single, virtual collaborative environment. This will help reduce time and resources formally devoted to notify and/or distribute documents between the different departments of the Consortium. SMARTEAM is an IBM PLM solution developed by Dassault Systèmes.

Arion Data Systems S.L., an IT consulting and solutions company and an IBM business partner, will help the CELLS consortium manage and optimize the global information system related to the project.

"CELLS is looking forward to apply IBM's PLM solutions -- like many other leading private companies and international laboratories -- and to see its impact on the way we work in our scientific environment, focused on a unique multi-disciplinary single-product development," said Lluís Miralles, Engineering Services Division Head of CELLS.

"This synchrotron is a flagship project for the scientific and industrial community that will return unique benefits in terms of advanced research. Arion Data Systems is proud to contribute with leading technology and know-how to this huge advancement in scientific research. It is another industry that is now reaping the benefits of PLM," said Jordi Martín, Arion Data Systems' PLM Division Manager.
