New IBM Monitor Line Offers Flat Panel Displays For As Low As $499

Industry Trend in Flat Panel Technology Continues to Lower Costs; Bright, Crisp, Space-Saving Displays Are Now Available Within The Budget Reach of Consumers and Businesses

Research Triangle Park, N.C - 11 May 2001: IBM today announced the availability of 15" flat panel monitors for as low as $499 with the purchase of any IBM ThinkPad, NetVista, IntelliStation or IBM XServer workstation. Additionally, IBM announced three other new flat panel monitors, making IBM's monitor lineup one of the most comprehensive in the industry. Included in the new lineup is the T210, a 20.8" flat panel monitor that offers the industry's highest resolution in production.

Improved Performance at a Lower Price Point
IBM's T540 is an affordable and flexible option for both consumers and businesses, providing high quality, crisp images in a thin, lightweight, energy-efficient package at an industry-low price. A cost-effective alternative to a traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor, the T540 significantly reduces eyestrain, and takes up less desk space.

IBM also announced a new 17" monitor, the T750. Priced at $1269, the T750 offers improved front of screen performance and dual connectors which provide a choice of analog and/or digital attachment to the system. This offers customers maximum flexibility by enabling them to transition from a legacy analog system attachment to a digital system attachment without having to acquire a new monitor. The T750 also supports dual input, allowing the monitor to be attached to two system units concurrently.

"Today's announcement from IBM represents a timely response to increased customer demand for lower cost flat panel solutions," said Bob Sutherland, an analyst with Technology Business Research. "There is a growing trend toward the use of flat panel monitors in the industry. Rising real estate costs, lower flat panel prices, and power consumption costs are narrowing the total cost of ownership (TCO) divide between flat panel and old-line CRT monitors."

"IBM is also broadening its range of flat panel offerings to meet industry demand for high resolution, high content and touch screen solutions. These new offerings meet the productivity requirements of customers in industries like publishing, medicine, finance and retail that require superior resolution, larger viewing fields or touch-screen capabilities."

With IBM flat panel monitors companies can realize significant savings in the form of lower energy costs, better use of space and reduced furniture expense. IBM's flat panel monitors generate about 30 percent less heat than CRT monitors. Also, IBM's flat panel monitors, which take up one-third the space of CRT monitors, can be mounted off the desk on brackets or radial arms so they take up no desk space.

Leading Resolution for High Performance Needs
Drawing from IBM's leadership in display technology innovation, the new 20.8" T210 flat panel monitor offers an amazing resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels -- two-and-a-half times the resolution of typical large-screen monitors. The T210's large size enables users to open more windows of information on their screens. For example, a page layout editor can display and read two full-sized 8.5 x 11-inch pages side-by-side, and a financial trader can access more sources of information simultaneously. Offering a 30 percent dots per inch improvement from IBM's existing 18" monitor, the T210 addresses the high performance needs of professionals in other fields such as science, engineering and medicine.

Innovative Touch Screen Technology
Taking advantage of the latest color touch screen technology, IBM has also introduced the T54T, a 15" flat panel monitor which allows interaction with the computer without a mouse or keyboard. The T54T touch screen monitor senses electrical signals to determine the presence and location of your finger as it makes contact with the surface of the touch screen.

Strengths of the capacitive technology include a fast response time, durability and tolerance for surface contamination including grease, water or dirt -- making it ideal for use in retail, banking, restaurants, manufacturing and other environments where touch is used to interface to a computer.

Industry Standards Compliance
Certified for global acceptance, IBM monitors meet specific requirements relating to emissions, energy consumption, ergonomics, usability and safety. In fact, most IBM monitors comply with most of the following standards: Energy Star, ISO 9241-3, MPR II, NUTEK, TCO-95, TCO-99. In addition, IBM's award-winning monitors are protected by a three-year limited parts and labor warranty (1), with service and support available toll free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (2).
