Banco De Guayaquil Goes Live With New IBM Infrastructure

QUITO, ECUADOR - 14 Oct 2008: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Banco de Guayaquil, the second largest financial institution in all of Ecuador, has gone live with a new IBM infrastructure of servers, storage and software as means to improve data center efficiency and processing capability at its two data centers.

Banco de Guayaquil replaced its hardware at both the production and back-up sites with two IBM z9 mainframes, and as a result, increased its processing capacity by 35 percent. New software including z/VSE, storage hardware including the DS8100 as well as services and support were included in the implementation.

The new infrastructure went live on September 29th of the present year.

Banco de Guayaquil was looking to improve its online environment to support the bank's business growth, keeping high quality and security standards. The bank was also structuring new projects, like "Banco del Barrio" (Neighborhood Bank), targeted at retailers. The challenge was to install a service point at a non-banking store, such as pharmacies, stores, telephone booths, etc. located in urban and rural areas that attract many visitors. This means moving the bank closer to the neighborhood, to places where there is no banking presence, thus fostering the development of banking services in the country.

"Banco de Guayaquil is a great example of how leading financial institutions are looking at the IBM mainframe as the foundation for a new enterprise infrastructure," said Mauricio Arias, General Manager IBM Ecuador. "We're pleased that Banco de Guayaquil is now able to provide the services and offerings they need for their customers, based on the reliability of the IBM mainframe. We look forward to a long relationship."
