Itaú enters the Green IT age

Itaú Bank acquires first z10 mainframe from IBM Brasil

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - 11 Jul 2008: Itaú Bank (NYSE: IBM) is the first Brazilian bank to acquire the IBM System z10 mainframe. Launched two months ago, the machine was designed to increase efficiency and performance of data centers while reducing energy and cooling costs. The acquisition was conducted as part of the process of capacity upgrade and update of Itaú's central computer environment, and is included in the strategic IT infrastructure evolution plan to support the growth of the bank's operations. In 2008 alone, it plans on opening approximately 140 agencies across Brazil.

The acquisition will enable increasing the mainframe processing capacity by 10,750 MIPS (millions of instructions per second) at Itaú Bank’s main data center in São Paulo, which will now have a total capacity of 56,000 MIPS. Additionally, the bank will also update the computers in its Disaster Recovery data center, located in

The adoption of the new z10 machine reinforces Itaú’s strategy to maintain its technological environment always updated. It was initially acquired for the evolution of the system development and homologation environment.

“Initiatives focused on ecoefficiency in data centers have always been part of Itaú’s agenda, aligned with our view of sustainability. In the past 18 months, measures like this have enabled an optimization of 5.3 GWh/year in energy consumption, generating savings in the amount of R$1.2 million, plus environmental gains with the evolution of cooling systems using HFC type gas, an ecologically correct gas that does not attack the ozone layer", says João Bezerra Leite, director of Computer and Telecommunications Operations at Itaú.

In the period between 2008 and 2010, major projects in the Green IT area, such as server virtualization, adoption of "green" equipment and the deployment of the Next Generation Data Center (NGDC) concept will elevate even further the standards for optimization in energy consumption, reinforcing Itaú’s strategy of focusing on business and social sustainability. In addition, it will provide an efficient and optimized infrastructure, an important condition to support business demands and ensure that technology answers the demands of Itaú Bank’s customers.

“Itaú Bank has been an IBM customer for over 40 years, relying on solutions from all our divisions: hardware, software, consulting and services. It is an example of a relationship of trust and partnership”, says Carlos Franchi Júnior, Itaú account executive at IBM Brasil.
