NEW YORK,, NY - 06 Feb 2008: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today introduced ten industry solutions that unlock the business value of information for customers across key industries including banking, retail, healthcare, government, life sciences and manufacturing. A result of IBM’s recent acquisition of Cognos, the new Information on Demand offerings unite IBM’s SOA and industry expertise with the powerful business intelligence and performance management capabilities of Cognos.
By accelerating the pace at which information can be used, the new solutions help businesses tackle some of the toughest information-intensive challenges in their industry such as using information collected about customers to provide improved services based on personalized customer needs. The new offerings further IBM’s Information on Demand strategy, a cross-company effort designed to help IBM clients optimize their business processes and maximize performance across their enterprises, and illustrate IBM’s ability to rapidly and aggressively integrate Cognos as a strategic asset throughout its software, hardware and services businesses.
"The combination of IBM and Cognos is enabling us to deliver new business insights to clients via a comprehensive portfolio of industry solutions that tap into the most complete, open standards-based business intelligence and performance management platform," said Ambuj Goyal, general manager, IBM Information Management. "We are quickly capitalizing on the Cognos acquisition through new offerings that help companies expand the value of their information for competitive advantage."
The new and enhanced solutions include an update to the recently launched IBM Retail Integration Framework to support store operations and planning (P&L); a new municipal performance scorecard for government agencies; a new solution that optimizes sales and operations planning for manufacturing companies; a new promotional spending and compliance solution for pharmaceutical companies; enhancements to financial risk insight and risk-adjusted profitability solutions for banking; enhancements to the crime management and insight solution; enhancements to two cross-industry solutions for workforce analytics and financial planning; and a new analytics solution for healthcare providers that will be unveiled later this month.
Joint IBM-Cognos Industry Solutions Deliver New Business Insight
IBM announced today a new set of capabilities that complement the IBM Retail Integration Framework. The IBM Retail Integration Framework, coupled with new Cognos offerings, provides retailers an intuitive approach to optimizing store operations, planning, managing and measuring capital-intensive projects such as new store development, and more effectively dealing with industry consolidations, increasing profit targets and shrinking margins. Cognos complements the Retail Integration Framework by adding scorecarding, reporting, analysis, and planning tools to help improve retail performance.
For the banking industry, two new solutions are now available including the Financial Risk Insight for Banking Solution and the Risk-Adjusted Profitability for Banking Solution. The Financial Risk Insight Solution is based on industry best practices and the proven technology of the IBM Banking Data Warehouse coupled with Cognos 8 Business Intelligence (BI). Successfully deployed at a number of the world’s leading financial institutions, the combination of the IBM Banking Data Warehouse with Cognos 8 BI gives financial services companies an integrated, enterprise-wide view of risk across divisions, products, geographies and risk classes. The Risk-Adjusted Profitability for Banking Solution provides integrated risk management and financial planning support. Clients using this solution can capitalize on activity-based costing to build precise multi-dimensional, product-level profitability plans and forecasts that are aligned with risk management strategies, enabling greater financial planning accuracy and building a vital connection between the finance and risk organizations.
In addition, a new Life Sciences Promotional Spend and Compliance Solution enables pharmaceutical companies to accelerate their ability to fulfill complex, evolving US state promotional spend regulations, and build a platform for integrating critical customer, promotional spend, drug sales and clinical information to best enable improved business decision-making and planning.
A new IBM Municipal Scorecard Blueprint brings Cognos technology and extensive experience in the public sector to help government agencies establish a consistent framework for performance management and accountability in local, municipal and county governments.
IBM is also combining Cognos’ Sales and Operations Planning Performance Blueprints with extensive manufacturing industry expertise to deliver offerings that allow manufacturers to reconcile sales and demand forecasts with supply chain and production plans that are in line with corporate financial objectives, and react more quickly to changing market conditions.
Prior to the acquisition, IBM Global Technology Services and IBM Global Business Services partnered with Cognos to create IBM Workforce Analytics solutions based on Cognos Workforce Performance. These analytic applications announced today provide customers with increased visibility into human resources and learning data by delivering standard metrics and reports that enable informed business decisions based on the most reliable and timely information.
The acquisition of Cognos will also incorporate broader business intelligence capabilities into a new Health Analytic solution for healthcare providers. This solution, which will help healthcare organizations optimize performance in areas from revenue cycle management to patient care, will be unveiled at the 2008 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual conference later this month.
Hundreds of organizations worldwide are using IBM software, processes, frameworks and integration models to accelerate their business transformation, regulatory compliance, customer and financial management solutions. The combination of IBM and Cognos industry experience and assets provides a services-oriented approach to help clients manage all their information, delivering new business insight and performance management to drive competitive advantage in their industries.
