SOMERS, NY - 24 Feb 1999: . . . IBM today announced that its RS/6000 S70 family of Enterprise Servers achieved the fastest UNIX web server ranking, according to the latest SPECweb96* benchmark report.

The RS/6000 S70 Advanced achieved a SPECweb96 benchmark of 20,200 hits per second, the first UNIX server to break the 20,000 threshold, and the RS/6000 S70 recorded a total of 19,264 hits per second. The SPECweb96 benchmark is an industry-standard measure of Web server performance. The RS/6000 results more than double the published benchmark number for Sun Microsystems.

"IBM proves again that customers looking for industry-leading UNIX performance for their e-business applications need look no further than the RS/6000, the engine behind millions of e-business transactions completed every day," said David Gelardi, director of Benchmarking and Solution Initiatives, RS/6000 division. "IBM has provided thousands of Web-based UNIX solutions and this latest ranking further demonstrates our commitment to provide our customers with a competitive Web advantage."

With these results, IBM's servers have grabbed the top three spots on the current top 20 SPECweb96 list with IBM's S/390 Parallel Enterprise G5 Turbo server still leading with 21,591 hits per second. In fact, IBM dominates the top 20 list with nine of the fastest servers, further proving IBM's ability to provide powerful engines of e-business.
SPECweb96 benchmarks were developed by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation's (SPEC) Open Systems Group -- a nonprofit organization -- in conjunction with leading research organizations and Web product vendors. SPECweb96 has become a key standard as an indicator of Web server performance.
