LAS VEGAS, Nevada - 19 Apr 1999: . . . IBM* today announced that its IntelliStation* M Pro workstation is the first desktop computer system certified to run Avid** Technology's new Media Composer XL family of Windows*** NT-based television editing systems. Currently used to edit approximately 85% of all U.S. prime-time television shows, Media Composer was previously only available on Apple Macintosh computers.

"With this announcement, broadcast editors now have the choice of running Media Composer on either Macintosh or Intel-based NT workstations." said Tom Copeland, vice president of workstation research with industry analyst firm IDC. "Avid clearly recognizes the industry's increasing demand for solutions built on the Intel architecture. To IBM's credit, the IntelliStation has earned Avid's respect and endorsement in a very demanding application environment."

Avid Media Composer is available exclusively through Avid's worldwide network of resellers. To ensure quality control, Avid performs rigorous testing in order to certify particular workstations for its applications. To date, IBM IntelliStation is the sole NT system certified for Media Composer XL as well as Avid's other NT-based video editing products, Avid Xpress and Symphony, which have been shipping on the IntelliStation M Pro since October 1998. As a result, Avid's worldwide network of dealers have been enlisted as IntelliStation resellers.

"We have worked very closely with IBM to qualify an industry-standard workstation which could meet the extreme demands of our professional video applications," said Paul Henderson, vice president of product marketing for Avid. "It's also a great benefit to our customers that many of the companion applications they use with Media Composer are also certified to run on the IBM IntelliStation."

To achieve certification from Avid, IBM's IntelliStation was subject to a series of rigorous user-emulation tests performed by engineers in Avid's labs. The purpose of the thorough testing process is to verify that the system will continue to perform as designed under all performance conditions.

"IBM has worked very closely with Avid for over two years to ensure that the IntelliStation meets the requirements of the most demanding video editing professionals for price/performance, expandability, and reliability," said Jay Ornellas, IBM IntelliStation's global segment manager for digital content creation. "Being chosen for the leading digital nonlinear editing application is another example of the excellent job our engineers have done to create a top-performing, stable platform for today's most sophisticated creative tools."

Avid's Media Composer XL, Avid Xpress for Windows NT and Avid Symphony products join Avid SOFTIMAGE|3D 3-D animation software and Avid/Digidesign's Pro Tools audio workstation, along with a broad range of digital content creation software applications and hardware either certified for or compatible with IBM's award-winning line of IntelliStation workstations. Of all NT workstations in the market today, IBM's IntelliStation leads in the number of certified and/or compatible applications for digital content creation, including the broadcast community. A partial list of vendors whose products have been tested and are available on the IntelliStation follows:

Adobe, Alias|Wavefront, Avid, Bitstream, Color Partnership, DPS, Discreet, Dreamscape, Eidos, Eyeon, Fast, Founder, Gestel, in:sync, Macromedia, Matrox, Maxon, Media 100. MetaCreations, Micrografx, Microsoft, Miramar, NetObjects, NewTek, Pathlight, Pinnacle, Puffin Designs, Quark, Side Effects Software, Silicon Grail, Sonic Foundry, Strata, Wright America, and Xaos Tools.

The IBM IntelliStation series of Windows NT-based workstations deliver high-performance to all digital media creation applications. IntelliStation combines Intel's most advanced processors with Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. The result is a powerful workstation that delivers the highest levels of productivity for image processing, pre-press, Web design, 3D modeling/animation/rendering, nonlinear video editing and special effects.
