IBM Takes Tennis Action at The Championships, Wimbledon to the 'Net

Official Site at www.wimbledon.org

ARMONK, NY - 17 Jun 1999: -- Whether they're seeking the latest scores, searching for a tournament souvenir, news or views, tennis fans can be a part of the Wimbledon action by logging onto the Official Web site - now live - at http://www.wimbledon.org .

As the information technology supplier and consultant to the All England Lawn Tennis Club, IBM and the Club will serve up the official Web site to fans around the world for the fifth consecutive year. This year's tournament Web site will capture all the action and excitement of the Championship fortnight June 21-July 4, 1999.

A hit with tennis fans around the world, last year's official Wimbledon Web site recorded 233 million 'hits' - an increase of around 360 per cent compared to 1997 - as tennis fans flocked to take their "virtual seat" at Wimbledon to follow the action.

Highlights of http://www.wimbledon.org will include:

-- The Wimbledon Channel -- Featuring fast-track links to audio, video, statistics, news and photographs, the Wimbledon Channel - an enhanced version of the Java Scoreboard feature previously available on the site - allows easy access to live scores from all courts in real-time. The Wimbledon Channel can be downloaded to a user's desktop allowing fans to keep it in a corner of their screens while using other programs.

-- FanCards -- New this year, tennis fans can now send electronic postcards to their favourite players or their friends and family from anywhere in the world. Users can choose from a variety of FanCard designs, type in a personal message and click to send greetings and congratulations on-line to their favourite players.

-- "Slam Cam" and "NetCam" -- The official Wimbledon Web site gives fans a truly interactive experience. With "Slam Cam", tennis fans can direct a robotic camera that pans, zooms and takes snap shots of Wimbledon all from their PCs. Developed by IBM to capture still images from live broadcast cameras before posting them on the Web, "NetCam" lets fans around the world see what's happening on Centre Court as well as on the other Show Courts.

-- Shop -- Fans worldwide can purchase exclusive official Wimbledon merchandise via the on-line Wimbledon shop.

-- News and Reviews -- Wimbledon's top team of tennis journalists work round the clock to bring the very latest from The Championships.

-- Sounds of Wimbledon -- Via the Web site fans will be able to hear live broadcasts from Radio Wimbledon, the official special event radio station of The Championships, which includes commentary from BBC Radio 5 Live.

-- And much more -- Finally, there will be audio interviews, post match interview transcripts, video clips of player interviews, up-to-the-minute information about competitors, the Draws, results and comprehensive information about the All England Club and The Championships, including ticket and transport information.

In addition to the official tournament Web site, IBM also provides equipment and services to collect results and statistics from the matches and distributes information to broadcasters and display boards around the grounds at Wimbledon. The IBM Cyber Court debuts this year at Wimbledon and will allow fans at the Championships an opportunity to check up-to-date match scores and stats, surf the Internet, send electronic postcards and play interactive games.

The official Wimbledon Web site is also accessible at: http://www.wimbledon.org.
