IBM's World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia Prepares Students for the New Millennium with new CD-ROM titles for 2000

Families Now Have Access to a World of Information With the New World Book Millennium 2000 Series

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - 30 Jun 1999: - IBM (R) today announced availability of the World Book (TM) Millennium 2000 Series, the most comprehensive multimedia encyclopedia designed for students. With an exclusive "Surf the Millennium" feature, World Book 2000 takes students on a journey through historical events with content written from the perspective of each time period.

Available in three different CD-ROM editions -- Standard, Deluxe, and Premier Reference Library -- each Millennium 2000 product offers a unique set of features and functions for students, parents and teachers. Together, IBM and World Book continue to expand the World Book product line to provide families with a collection of offerings specially suited to match their needs.

"IBM and World Book are empowering today's students to be smarter than ever, with access to many of the world's leading experts in a variety of fields of study," said Mike Braun, general manager, IBM Consumer Division. "While today's students have access to more information than ever before, their success depends on the quality and organization of that information, not merely the quantity. IBM World Book is the tool best-suited to help students sort through it all."

The World Book Millennium 2000 Series
IBM's new World Book Millennium 2000 product line features a special Surf the Millennium section which invites students to visit each century of the past millennium, beginning with the year 1000, on simulated Web sites. Students will learn about important historical figures and events in a realistic setting as the text is written from each century's perspective. For example, if students research Mozart using Surf the Millennium, they will find his resume highlighting his musical background and experience, references from performances he has given, and even audio samples of his famous compositions. Sample audio and video, as well as compelling content, engage students' interest in each time period. Students can easily return to a modern day retrospective look at the century by selecting the "View from 2000" icon that brings them back to the traditional encyclopedia content and offers a commentary from today's perspective.

Thousands of new or updated articles incorporating recent events, issues and advancements have been added to the entire World Book Millennium 2000 series, providing students with a comprehensive look at important historical events. Also, with the purchase of any World Book Millennium 2000 CD-ROM product, consumers with Internet access receive a free year of updates.

World Book Millennium 2000 Standard Edition is a one CD-ROM product that contains all the articles from the best-selling World Book Encyclopedia print set encyclopedia and thousands more -- including online access, for Internet users, to every World Book Year Book article dating back to the original volume first published in 1917. In addition, the CD-ROM contains a comprehensive collection of integrated multimedia features, including videos, virtual reality tours, cartographically-accurate maps, full color photographs and illustrations, and high-quality audio. The Deluxe Edition is a two CD-ROM title that builds on the Standard Edition by incorporating a critically acclaimed Homework Toolkit -- a collection of wizards designed to help students create charts, reports and time lines -- as well as more integrated multimedia features and functions, including expanded video, animations and simulations. The Premier Reference Library is a four CD-ROM product that features World Book's curriculum-oriented content, interactive multimedia features, learning tools and an all-star lineup of reference titles including the Rand McNally New Millennium (TM) World Atlas Deluxe, Merriam-Webster(TM) Reference Library, and three Information Please (R) Almanacs.
