RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - 17 Aug 1999: -- IBM(a) today announced a new series of commercial PCs that are easier to use and less expensive to own and maintain. Available in both general purpose and Small Business Series models, the newly designed IBM PC 300GL features a new suite of manageability tools designed to save businesses both time and money. Additionally, the new PC boasts IBM's smallest commercial PC design to date and can be leased for as little as $30 per month from IBM's SuccessLease(a) for Small Business (1).

"Businesses today are looking at a wide range of factors when making PC purchasing decisions. More than anything, they are looking closely at the total cost of ownership. They want a reliable package that not only carries a low pricetag, but that will also cost less to maintain over the course of the product's lifecycle,'' said Andy Bose, President, Access Media International USA. "It's evident that IBM designed the new PC 300GL with this in mind. If implemented properly, IBM's sophisticated set of manageability tools could help small businesses realize significant cost savings.''

The new desktop manageability tools fall under the umbrella of IBM's recently announced Universal Manageability (UM) Services, which expands upon and replaces IBM's Universal Management Agent(a). With the purchase of an IBM PC, UM Services are available for downloading (at no additional charge) on IBM's website at http://www.ibm.com/pc/ww/software/sysmgmt/products/ums, UM Services is a software program that allows for remote system administration. Remote management benefits companies that don't have a technology specialist in every office location. They are also helpful to small businesses that work with outsourced technicians. Compatible with the most popular broad management packages, UM Services smoothly integrate into offerings from Microsoft, Tivoli, Computer Associates and Intel among others.

"No other vendor comes close to IBM when it comes to providing customers with the extra tools they need to manage and protect their valuable IT assets,'' said Anne Gardner, vice president and general manager, IBM desktop systems. "Our rich technology heritage and wide array of resources allows IBM to provide our customers with PCs that are not only reliable and affordable but that also contain the leading-edge tools to help customers lower their total cost of ownership.''

For businesses that wish to expand upon the management capabilities of UM Services, IBM offers an advanced suite of manageability software called UM Desktop Extensions. Consisting of six complementary software programs, the UM Desktop Extensions program further simplifies basic maintenance and data protection tasks. For example, one of the software suite's programs helps minimize user-induced errors by allowing system administrators to hide or disable certain operating system features from employees. Another tool performs emergency data back-up in the event that an operating system gets corrupted or a hard drive fails. The software is designed so that an employee can continue to work while the administrator fixes the problem remotely.

New Design Features
Available in either a traditional desktop or microtower design, the PC 300GL features IBM's smallest design to date for a business PC, and takes up less space in a user's office. Other design elements for the PC 300GL series include tool-less cover removal, swivel hinges for easy maintenance of internal parts, and an outside sliding door that covers the floppy and CD drives when not in use.
