SOMERS, N.Y. - 21 Sep 1999: IBM today announced it has broken the previous world record for Baan enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications performance.

The test, completed on the new IBM RS/6000 S80 and AIX 4.3.3, IBM's UNIX operating system, positions IBM as the performance leader in scalable enterprise computing.

The test was run using the standard Baan ERP benchmark suite in three-tier client/server mode which determines the exact number of Baan Reference Users (BRUs) that can be supported on a specific vendor's computer system.

IBM used a 24-way RS/6000 S80 database server with Oracle8 database software to achieve 17,441 BRUs, breaking a previous record claimed by Sun Microsystems by 62 percent. The benchmark demonstrates the scalability of Baan ERP solutions running on the IBM RS/6000 S80 server. Joint Baan and IBM solutions are designed to scale to meet the demands of the world's largest companies, and support the rapid growth associated with today's Internet economy.

"Baan is committed to working with IBM as a strategic partner to deliver highly scalable industry leading solutions to Baan customers,'' said Rocky Gunderson, senior vice president, product management, Baan Company. ``The recent announcement of the joint IBM and Baan Implementation Factories and our record setting Baan benchmark on the RS/6000 S80 system demonstrate that together, Baan and IBM speed our customers' implementation time while providing solutions that can grow at the speed of e-business.''

"The RS/6000 S80 establishes IBM as the industry leader in enterprise computing scalability,'' said Rod Adkins, general manager, IBM RS/6000. "IBM is delivering world class price performance for Baan and other ERP solutions.''
