BOULDER, Colo. - 23 Sep 1999: -- IBM(1) today announced the IBM Infoprint(1) Color 8, a workgroup laser printer designed for fast color business printing. Unlike any color office printer available today, IBM's newest Infoprint printer has an expected street price of $2,699 and runs at eight pages-per-minute (ppm) -- up to twice the engine speed in the same price range as competition.

"IBM provides total solutions for enterprise printing needs,'' said David Dobson, vice-president of marketing, IBM Printing Systems. "Along with printers, IBM offers the industry's best service, software to manage printers, competitive financing and supplies--everything a business needs for integrated printing.''

Self-monitoring Printer
The IBM Infoprint Color 8 monitors itself and automatically sends e-mail or pager alerts to administrators. Messages are routed to any designated person, such as an administrative assistant to add toner, or to technical support with embedded error data to help in troubleshooting.

Taking proactive printer management one step further, IBM's Network Print Manager, a printer utility for Windows 95/98 and NT, allows users to actively monitor the status and control multiple IBM printers on a real-time basis. Downloaded from the Web at no cost, this utility allows network administrators to remotely install and configure network connectivity options, view the status of a printer and quickly resolve a common condition such as a paper tray that is open or empty.

Bringing Color Printing Up to the Speed of e-Business
The e-business model requires real-time, global access; the Infoprint Color 8 offers color printing and printer management anytime, from anywhere. Support of Internet Printing Protocol, the emerging open industry standard for Internet printer access, gives users and network administrators access to print resources over the Internet.

Customers can access the IBM Infoprint Color 8 from anywhere and enjoy the benefits of office-quality color printing without incurring overnight shipping fees. ``As long as you have an Internet connection, you can print to the Infoprint Color 8 no matter where you happen to be,'' said Dobson.

Actual Service Access in Real Time
IBM is the only printer company that offers all-day, every-day service, including a new and innovative offering. With IBM, users have actual--not virtual--access to real-time service and status information. Using an Internet browser, customers can open, cancel or change services requests, monitor service call status, access service history and note printer locations. Service representatives automatically respond and arrive on the service call with foreknowledge and appropriate parts to fix any condition efficiently and effectively. With just a few clicks over the Web, customers also can order parts and supplies for their IBM printers.

Key Product Features
The Infoprint Color 8 prints at 600-dpi and uses a single-pass design. Optimized for speed, the printer delivers up to 8-ppm in color -- up to twice the engine speed as similarly priced products. For easy color control, the Infoprint Color 8 incorporates Heidelberg(2) color management tools for optimum business printing.

"IBM Infoprint Color 8's fast color speed at 8-ppm should appeal to 60 percent of color laser buyers whose purchase will complement their existing monochrome printers,'' said Angele Boyd, vice president of peripheral research at International Data Corp. (IDC).

Unlike traditional color laser printers, the Infoprint Color 8 opens from the top--at waist level--providing easy access to the paper path and toner for quick and clean maintenance. The printer's straight, reliable paper path allows for greater media choices, including labels, transparencies, card stock and other special media. Printing full color sheets in a single pass with minimal paper and mechanical movement within the machine improves speed and reliability, extends parts life, decreases paper jams and reduces user intervention.

The Infoprint Color 8 is Year 2000 ready, EuroReady and supports IBM AIX(1), OS/400(1) and OS2(1); Windows(3) 3.x/95/98, Windows NT(3) 4.0; Apple Macintosh, Sun Solaris and other UNIX(4) environments. Languages supported are PCL 5c and Adobe PostScript 3.

Pricing, Availability and Warranty
IBM Infoprint Color 8, announced worldwide (with the exception of Asia-Pacific) today, has a list price of $3279, an anticipated street price of $2699 and will be generally available in the United States and Canada on September 24, 1999; in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America on October, 29 1999. IBM InfoPrint Color 8 will be sold directly from IBM as well as through a network of resellers which includes IBM Personal Systems Group resellers and IBM Printing Systems' printer remarketers.
