SeniorNet and IBM Celebrate 20 Years of Computer-Using Older Adults

IBM a Presenting Sponsor of SeniorNet's 20th Anniversary Conference and Gala Awards Celebration

Santa Clara, CA - 09 Oct 2006: SeniorNet, the world's leading nonprofit technology educator of older adults, today announces its 20th Anniversary of empowering older adults 50+ with computer access and education. To celebrate, SeniorNet will host its 20th Anniversary Conference and Gala Awards Celebration, sponsored by IBM Corporation, on October 20-21, 2006 at the Hilton Arlington in Arlington Virginia.

"IBM has proudly supported SeniorNet's mission of providing computer
access and education to older adults for nearly 20 years and has been
instrumental to the growth and national expansion of the SeniorNet
organization," said Leslie Smith, IBM business development executive and
SeniorNet chairman of the board. "In recent years, SeniorNet was
instrumental in the development and subsequent philanthropic rollout of
IBM's Web Adaptation Technology. Seniors within the SeniorNet network
worked with IBM researchers to evaluate and refine this innovative
technology, which allows users to reformat Web pages for easier reading and
navigation."
The two-day conference and gala is themed "Seniors Leading the Way:
Celebrating 20 Years of Empowering Older Adults With Technology," and will
host members of the global SeniorNet community, organizations in the area
of aging, community leaders, and technology sponsors.
"We are incredibly grateful for IBM's long-standing commitment to
SeniorNet, and our 20th Anniversary is an opportunity for both
organizations to commemorate 20 years of older adults leading the way in
both technology adoption and civic engagement," said Kristin Fabos,
SeniorNet executive director. "At the Conference, we'll launch the platform
for SeniorNet's next 20 years, including mission-broadening initiatives to
bridge the 'Digital Divide' for seniors in underserved communities."
The conference will explore the numerous ways that technology serves
the human spirit and will provide useful insights on working with the
nation's booming population of older adults. The Keynote speaker at lunch
on Friday, October 20th will be Abigail Trafford, Washington Post columnist
and author of 'My Time: Making the Most of the Rest of Your Life.'
As part of the two-day celebration, SeniorNet will also host a press
conference on Friday, October 20th at the National Press Club in
Washington, D.C., where, together with IBM and other sponsors, it will
announce the strategic direction and new initiatives for the organization's
future.
The Keynote Speaker for the Gala Awards Celebration on Saturday
evening, October 21st is Juan Williams, one of the nation's outstanding
political writers and thought leaders. During his 21-year career at The
Washington Post, Williams served as an editorial writer, op-ed columnist,
and White House reporter. He is currently a senior correspondent for
