Digital River enables companies to generate increased visibility for their digital products through an established indirect online sales channel. IBM's software, also available via download on ibm.com and through other sales channels, costs $35 per laptop or desktop PC.
IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files is a "real-time data safety net" that provides PC users and small businesses with continuous backup for information on laptops and desktop PCs. Since every version of a file is saved continuously, digitally stored information, music and photos are protected from viruses, file corruption or accidental deletion.
The software helps home-based businesses, medical offices, retail shops and individual computer users -- who rarely back up the information on their PCs -- to continuously safeguard information the same way that banks and other big businesses do.
IBM's software captures and saves important information to documents continuously and also sends an encrypted copy of the information to a remote location, such as a USB drive -- all within milliseconds. With just a few clicks of a mouse, users can restore files that have been corrupted or accidentally deleted, back to any point in time -- adding multiple layers of defense against data loss. Since the backed-up data is encrypted, the information can be viewed only by those with authorized access to the computer.
"By offering IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files through mainstream online retail sites in Digital River's oneNetwork, consumers and small business users have access to an enterprise-class data recovery solution," said Don Peterson, senior vice president of global client development for Digital River. "We are leveraging our best practices for selling and promoting products online to help IBM increase its product exposure through some of the world's largest online retailers."
The software installs in a few simple steps. It determines where data should be saved on the laptop or PC and configures the "memory key" or other remote location to receive the backup copy -- all in a matter of minutes. The fast, step-by-step installation makes it ideal for people who lack advanced IT skills or do not have access to help desk support.
"Data loss threats caused by viruses and outages aren't just a big-business concern," said Kelly Beavers, director, IBM Storage Software. "This agreement with Digital River offers yet another way for small businesses and individuals to buy IBM's fast, simple and affordable solution to continuously protect data and files." Beavers added that IBM studies reveal that viruses, file corruption and human error, such as accidental deletion, account for more than 50 percent of data loss.
The software can be purchased and downloaded through the individual web sites of a large selection of online retailers in Digital River's oneNetwork.
