IBM Honored by EPA for Climate Protection

First Company to Earn Prestigious Award Twice

Washington, DC - 17 May 2006: The United States Environmental Protection Agency today announced that IBM has earned the 2006 Climate Protection Award for the company's outstanding efforts to protect the Earth's climate. IBM and 12 other Climate Protection award recipients, according to the EPA, have demonstrated ingenuity, leadership and public purpose by improving their environmental performance and encouraging others to do the same.

"These leading companies are proving that doing what is good for the environment can also be good for business," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. "EPA applauds the 2006 Climate and Ozone Protection Award winners for their efforts to ensure a better world for future generations."

Last year, the 13 winners collectively purchased over 1.5 million megawatt hours of green power to avoid burning fossil fuels, according to the EPA. The companies also generated wind and solar power on-site, increased energy efficiency, recycled refrigerants, and slashed the use of ozone-depleting substances and potent non-CO2 greenhouse gases. The award winners' efforts have eliminated millions of tons of greenhouse gases and ozone depleting substances.

"IBM considers climate change to be one of the most important global environmental issues facing the planet. While some say that cutting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions cost businesses money, we have found that it has in fact been good for both the environment and our business," said Wayne Balta, IBM Vice President of Corporate Environmental Affairs and Product Safety. "Through energy conservation and the use of renewable energy, IBM has avoided more than 1.28 million tons of CO2 emissions and has saved more than $100 million since 1998.

"IBM is honored to be among the prestigious companies earning the 2006 United States Environmental Protection Agency Climate Protection Award. IBM is also proud to be the first company to earn this award twice, having received its first EPA Award for climate protection in 1998."

The US EPA established the Climate Protection Awards in 1998 to recognize exceptional leadership, personal dedication, and technical achievements in protecting the Earth's climate. They are the most prestigious awards for Climate Protection in the United States, and due to their international scope, they are also among the most prestigious environmental awards for Climate Protection in the world. Businesses, non-profits, NGOs, public-sector organizations, and individuals may apply or be nominated. The Climate Protection Awards recognize achievements all over the world; applicants are not limited to the United States.
