By coupling these components with single or clustered Netfinity servers, significant improvements can be realized in disk storage capacity, high-availability, and performance. Storage resources can be shared efficiently and scaled rapidly, to meet increased demands by users for highly-available, heterogeneous access to expanding storage pools. These industry-standard Netfinity FAStT solutions allow you to build a wide range of scalable Storage Area Networks (SAN) with high-speed, full-fabric support, and modular components.

As part of today's announcements, IBM has expanded its portfolio to offer a full-fibre enterprise SAN based on Netfinity servers for: Distance Cluster with Remote Mirroring enables the separation of the two server nodes in a Microsoft(b) MSCS two-node cluster allowing local data to be mirrored to the server in a remote location up to 10 Km away using fibre channel technology. If there is a local site failure, the remote node can resume the operation without impacting data. As the industry's only Microsoft-certified remote mirroring solution, this SAN is a fast and reliable disaster readiness solution that offers distance protection of trusted fibre channel technology. Legato's Mirroring Extension software for Microsoft Cluster Service has been IBM Server Proven(superscript: (5)) and tested to work on this IBM SAN configuration.

To meet the need for greater manageability with the introduction of more complex SAN configurations, the company also announced today the IBM SAN Fibre Channel Managed Hub -- an entry-level hub that creates high-speed interconnections for such applications as high-availability clustering, storage consolidation, and LAN-free backup. The hub is designed for implementing entry-level, homogeneous, multinode server clusters and storage systems in fibre channel arbitrated-loop environments. The IBM SAN Fibre Channel Managed Hub contains eight ports each supporting 100 MB/second full duplex data transfer and can handle simultaneous data transfer with non-blocking architecture. Two hubs can be cascaded, providing a loop of up to fourteen ports, and can be attached to the IBM SAN Fibre Channel Switch providing loop attachment of storage devices. The IBM SAN Fibre Channel Managed Hub comes with IBM StorWatch Management software that enables customers to configure, manage, and service the hub via a Web browser from a workstation over an ethernet network connection. The IBM SAN Fibre Channel Managed Hub will be available in April and comes with a limited one-year warranty(superscript: (4)).

Over the past nine months, IBM has tested and introduced eight enterprise SANs based on IBM Netfinity Servers and six SAN management software applications from independent software vendors through the IBM Server Proven Program.
