Aggressive Pricing, Innovative Features Position IBM for Leadership

Select a topic or year

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C - 24 Apr 2000: -- For customers who want to make the most of their deskspace, IBM* announced today that it is tripling its line of space-saving Thin Film Transistor (TFT) flat panel monitors, coupled with new, aggressive price reductions on several of its most popular TFT and Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors. IBM is also announcing a sub-$1,000 TFT monitor and adding two new high-performance TFT monitors for advanced applications such as desktop publishing, CAD/CAM and finance.

By offering an expanded line of TFT monitors -- many at reduced prices -- IBM's award-winning flat panel monitor portfolio will appeal to an even broader range of customers, from small businesses and home users to large enterprises.

According to Bob O'Donnell, Research Manager, PC Displays and Projectors for IDC, "The market for TFT monitors is expected to grow significantly this year as businesses and consumers recognize the value of saving space. Much of this movement is driven by lower-cost monitors -- especially as we hit price points under $1,000, as IBM is doing with this announcement."

"IBM's expanded TFT product line, aggressive pricing strategy and new advanced features will fortify our leadership in the flat panel monitor market," said Doug Jamison, Brand Manager, IBM Visual Products. "We are confident that even more customers -- from small businesses to large enterprises -- will benefit from IBM's TFT monitors." He added that the company has agreements in place with five TFT suppliers, ensuring ample supply of IBM flat panel monitors.

TFT Flat Panel Monitor for the Masses

IBM's most affordable and user-friendly TFT flat panel monitor, the new IBM T54A 15-inch TFT Flat Panel Monitor, is ideal for displaying general business applications including word processing, business graphics and basic spreadsheets. This flat panel monitor delivers a bright, flicker-free 15.0-inch(superscript: (1)) viewable image with low reflectivity and a resolution up to 1024 x 768 pels. The IBM T54A offers a space-saving design with a tilt-stand for angling the monitor for greater viewing comfort. Lockable image controls help to prevent accidental changes and a simplified on-screen display is available in multiple languages. The IBM T54A is currently available in pearl white or black for the estimated reseller price of $979.00(superscript: (2)).

High-Performance TFT Flat Panel Monitors

For high-performance users, IBM has designed the new IBM T74A and IBM T86A TFT Flat Panel Monitors for specialized applications such as complex and over-sized spreadsheets and advanced graphic applications such as desktop publishing, medical and scientific imaging. This monitor is ideal for customers that want a large screen at a lower price point. The IBM T74A 17-inch TFT Flat Panel Monitor delivers a crisp, flicker-free 17.0-inch (superscript: (1)) viewable image with exceptionally wide viewing angle and low reflectivity. It displays crisp images and sharp details and offers a resolution up to 1024 x 768 pels. The IBM T74A 17-inch TFT Flat Panel Monitor is currently available in black and will be available in pearl white starting May 23, 2000 for the estimated reseller price of $2,299.00(superscript: (2)).

The IBM T86A 18-inch TFT Flat Panel Monitor is a high-performance monitor designed for advanced users that need superior display characteristics in a flexible and stylish, space-saving form-factor. Using the bundled Pivot Software, the monitor and the image can rotate to either landscape or portrait screen positions to view an 8.5- x 11-inch document or most Web pages in full screen. An improved detachable base allows user to lift, tilt, rotate the monitor for greater viewing comfort and work layout. As a result of reducing the bezel width by 40 percent, the IBM T86A is ideal for those customers installing larger flat panel monitors for dual-monitor applications in space-constrained environments. With a 18.1-inch (superscript: (1)) viewable image size, the T86A offers flicker free images with a resolution up to 1280 x 1024 pels. The IBM T86A 18-inch flat panel monitor is currently available in pearl white and black for an estimated reseller price of $3,199.00(superscript: (2))

Choice of Ergonomic Mountings

Customers can free up deskspace by mounting IBM "T Series" Flat Panel Monitors to office furniture and walls by using the IBM Radial Arm. The wall-mounting offers other benefits include flexible viewing angles and storage positions. The IBM Radial Arm will be available starting April 25, 2000 for an estimated reseller price of $169.(superscript: (2))

New Aggressive Price Reductions

To encourage customers to upgrade to a larger CRT monitor or make the switch to a flat panel monitor, IBM has reduced the prices on two-thirds of its Visuals portfolio - both TFT and CRT monitors -- between three and 19 percent. For example, 17-inch CRT monitors now range between $249-$399; 19-inch CRT monitors range between $499 - $579; 15-inch flat panel monitors now start as low as $979; and 18-inch flat panel monitors now start at $3,199. All prices are estimated reseller prices.
