New IBM Services Provide Foundation for Digital Signatures

Helping organizations make B2B and B2C e-commerce secure

SOMERS, NY - 08 Nov 2000: IBM today announced new services to help companies move faster in employing complex technologies for secure access to data, information protection and trusted e-commerce transactions.

The new services help companies strengthen their e-business security systemsand processes by introducing enabling technologies such as digital certificates and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), secure ways to address growing requirements for authentication, confidentiality, integrity and non-repudiation in the networked world.

"As more companies embrace e-markets, B2B electronic commerce, and more people buy goods and services over the Web, it's becoming increasingly important to verify who you are transacting with, to protect your transactions, and to know there is integrity as well as accountability in those transactions," said Cal Slemp, director global trust and e-commerce, IBM Global Services. "PKI provides the foundation for those security assurances, and IBM's new services smooth the PKI implementation path."

The services announced today are PKI Business Workshop and PKI Planning and Design. They are consulting and implementation services that help clients understand how a Public Key Infrastructure could benefit their business and get started on a PKI plan. The services also comprise a comprehensive set of modular consulting and integration activities that clients can selectto design PKI solutions as well as integrate PKI into the company's information technology infrastructure. IBM will implement the PKI solution as a custom service

IBM also announced today a PKI center of competency. The center provides IBM Global Services practitioners and their customers a wide range of skills, tools, training and alliance relationships required to support and deliver successful PKI solutions

A number of government agencies around the world are investigating or deploying PKI for a wide range of uses. These agencies include postal services, tax services, social security and branches of the American military. IBM is playing a leading role in the European Union's Trust Infrastructure for Europe project, which is investigating the technical, legal and business implications of European legislation on digital signatures. IBM uses PKI in its own products, for example, to provide embedded security in its NetVista desktop computers.

IBM developed these services based on work with organizations requiring such security. "IBM Global Services has been working with us since the earliest phases of our Identrus PKI project, most recently for deployment of an Identrus enabled eBPP solution," said Bernhard Esslinger, Director of IT at DeutscheBank AG and globally responsible for all PKI activities of Deutsche Bank group. "With IBM assistance as prime contractor for this project, and Secude for the cryptography and the Identrus signing interface, we are the first Identrus member financial institution to deploy an Identrus-based solution in a real world situation. Using this solution, Community Cargo Network (CCN) in Singapore has replaced the manual, written signature based process for dealing with their suppliers with the DeutscheBank-ebills solution which is more secure, cost effective and timely." Identrus is a global e-commerce trust organization sponsored by financial institutions for authentication and risk management across a broad range of industries and Internet applications.

The Canadian Payments Association, a nonprofit association mandated with establishing a national clearings and settlements system, has developed a framework to support secure e-commerce payment systems. "IBM assembled a team with proven project management experience and first-class expertise in PKI and in the business," said Bob Hammond, General Manager, CPA. "They not only have the world class skills needed to develop a PKI solution; they have demonstrated that they fully understand the business implications and helped us work through these issues to achieve our objectives. As a result, our PKI solution reflects our unique business model and what will work best for our members and for Canadian businesses and consumers."
