IBM Builds Bridge from Internet to SAN with New Storage Products; Debuts Industry-leading iSCSI Breakthrough Technology

Pre-tested, plug and play storage networking solutions help businesses consolidate, secure, preserve and share critical business data

Bridging NAS & SAN

IBM is bringing a new product offering to the market that converges Ethernet/IP networks & (SANs). The Network Attached Storage (NAS) 300G is a highly - 21 Feb 2001:

Today's announced initiative also includes customer-focused solutions aimed at accelerating the acceptance of SANs in the marketplace. The introduction of pre-tested, plug and play storage networking packages will help businesses of all sizes more easily solve their four most critical IT issues, including consolidating, securing, preserving and sharing business data.

The packages, depending on the business challenge, include the following components: IBM Modular Storage Server (MSS), Ultrium LTO (Linear Tape-Open) tape automation, IBM StorWatch resource management software, Flash Copy and PPRC (Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy) advanced copy middleware, plus a SAN Data Gateway and switches. Supported by IBM Global Services and IBM Global Financing, they are aimed at solving the following challenges:

SAN Enhancements

In addition, IBM announces a range of enhancements to its SAN capabilities including native fibre channel for IBM's 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library, and a 32 gigabyte cache upgrade to IBM's Shark, bringing even greater performance, scalability and flexibility to customers' SAN implementations. Native fibre channel will enable router-less SAN connections for the eServer family, Intel, and Sun platforms.

IBM is the world leader in storage systems, software, services and technology. The recipient of the National Medal of Technology for its contribitions to hard disk drive and storage technology, IBM led all companies once again with over 400 storage patents in 2000. IBM invented the magnetic hard disk drive in the mid-1950s and is responsible for nearly every major breakthrough in disk storage technology since then. IBM's open storage solutions are designed for the rigors or e-business collaboration utilizing next generation concepts for open storage by integrating modular technologies including disk, tape and optical storage media, powerful processors, and rich software.
