ARMONK, N.Y. - 06 Apr 2001: IBM today announced a record setting result on tests designed to simulate Internet commerce environments including retail sales and electronic banking, supporting more users at a scale factor that is 10 times all the other published results.
This achievement, which combines numerous IBM Intel®-based servers and the IBM DB2® Universal DatabaseTM, reaffirms IBM as an industry leader in designing scalable, industry-standard servers that meet today's demanding e-business needs.
The TPC-W test executes a mix of transaction types, much like any typical e-business environment. Utilizing a multiple tiered server environment, IBM processed a world record 6,272.5 web interactions per second at a scale factor of 100,000 items (WIPS@100,000), which is 10 times higher than the 10,000 items used by all other published results.(1) All components of the configuration are available today.
"With Web-based transactions for many companies growing by over 100 percent every year, e-businesses need to know that the solution they buy today will support them tomorrow," said Ian Miller, vice president, marketing, IBM eServer** xSeries. "In designing our servers, we created a growth scenario similar to what our customers face every day. The result is a clear indication that when it comes to handling heavy Internet traffic, we can carry the load."
This marks the first time that any company has measured performance at this scale factor. The DB2 database also featured a population of 144,000,000 customers on the IBM NUMA-Q ® E410 data server, in an integrated configuration that also included 18 Netfinity® 4500R and 2 Netfinity 6000R servers running Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server and other Microsoft software to support domain name service, web, commerce and indexing servers. The price/performance figure for this system is $195.59 per WIPS@100,000.(1) All components of the configuration are available today.
