Lights, Camera...IBM IBM Unveils New Technology for Broadcasters: IBM Media Production Suite


White Plains, N.Y. - 24 Apr 2001: IBM today unveiled the first release of its new digital asset management technology for video and broadcast production -- IBM Media Production Suite. IBM Media Production Suite is a flexible, browser-based, fully integrated solution that allows companies to manage, archive, reproduce, assemble, and distribute video assets -- in one comprehensive digital production environment.

According to META Group research, by 2004, $300 billion of content will be distributed electronically, of which nearly $100B will be digitally downloadable and will require some form of digital content management.

IBM Media Production Suite supports the media production process with integrated workflow, media transaction management, management of production quality media objects, and media archive management. Since customers' hardware environments and requirements vary significantly, Media Production Suite is an open and standards-based system that is customizable, depending on requirements. It is designed to be integrated with leading-edge video capture, management, storage, and distribution products. IBM Media Production Suite leverages proven IBM software infrastructure products, including DB2 Universal Database Enterprise Edition, IBM WebSphere Application Server, IBM Content Manager and Tivoli Storage Manager to meet the needs of broadcasters.

Highlights of the Media Production Suite include the ability of media companies to share, reuse, and re-purpose valuable media assets for increased production efficiencies or potential revenue generation. Media Production Suite manages both editable quality video and frame accurate proxies of that video. It links the video with robust metadata for efficient and effective search and retrieve. The suite boasts a multi-resolution framework including an ingest feature that captures video and basic meta data from analog or digital sources, and a catalog feature to edit and enhance meta data. The product allows access, sharing, and delivery of that content across the enterprise. Management of content -- from creation or capture to distribution -- in an open environment - is another benefit of the system. Lastly, the system creates a secure, scalable, non-degradable archive of digital media assets that can grow and adapt to future business needs.

IBM Media Production Suite is designed to integrate third party applications and tools, and supports open industry standards. Key third party products include Sony video servers and storage products, Virage video logging products and Minerva encoding products. Media Production Suite supports current MPEG standards and will support many of the major media format and media and meta-data exchange standards as they are finalized.

During the week of April 23-27, 2001, at NAB, IBM will showcase several Media Production Suite applications and users, including Media Production for Broadcasters, featuring a system created for CNN and Media Production for Video Producers, featuring a first-of-a-kind archive project designed for Paramount Picture's hit television show ET (Entertainment Tonight). IBM's demonstrations of Media Production Suite will be displayed at Booth # L1117, North Hall.
