IBM and Shanghai General Electronics Group Collaborate to Bring Pervasive Computing to China

SHANGHAI - 21 May 2001: IBM and Shanghai General Electronics Group (SGEG) have signed a pervasive computing strategic partnership agreement. Under the agreement, SGEG and its subsidiary Shanghai Video & Audio Electronic Co Ltd (SVA), will adopt IBM's pervasive computing end-to-end solutions to roll out information appliances built with IBM embedded middleware technologies and will develop applications running on IBM's end-to-end pervasive computing platform. IBM and SVA also will cooperate to develop various terminal products and related information services to suit the needs of the Chinese market.

According to the agreement, SGEG and IBM will establish China's first product demonstration center focusing on pervasive computing. SGEG will adopt IBM WebSphere Everyplace Embedded Edition to develop different types of intelligent terminal devices and to demonstrate the function of intelligent devices and infrastructure for the Chinese market. Using WebSphere Everyplace software, they will develop digital information products that connect the Internet to everyday life.

As one of the most famous electronic groups in China, Shanghai Broadcast Television Holding Limited owns many brands such as Gold Star, Kai Ge, Fei Yue and Shang Hai, in a wide range of product categories including communications, home appliances, computers and electronic home appliances. With the rapid development in the information technology and car industries, the Shanghai Broadcast Television group's recent restructuring has resulted in development for the digital information industry with new electronic devices and cars being the core transition strategy.

Shanghai Broadcast Television will adopt IBM WebSphere Everyplace to develop numerous wireless web applications to raise the functionality of traditional products and to implement the transition of information terminals. The development of pervasive computing solutions will help Shanghai Broadcast Television become a wireless web application service supplier and strengthen Shanghai Broadcast Television's competitive edge.
