Somers, N.Y. - 29 Jun 2001: IBM today announced general availability of TotalStorage IP Storage 200i, an industry-leading, open-architecture network storage appliance capable of transporting data and information via standard Internet protocols.
IP Storage 200i uses "iSCSI"--the emerging standard for transmitting SCSI storage protocols over IP-- which is designed to deliver many of the benefits of Storage Area Networks to users such as medium-sized businesses, departments, and remote branch office sites.
"IBM's IP Storage 200i announcement is a great way for smaller organizations to realize the benefits of iSCSI," said Tony Prigmore, Sr. Analyst, The Enterprise Storage Group, Inc. "The combination of IBM service and Tivoli storage management tools will set the bar for others."
The IP Storage 200i can be directly attached to an Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) and is optimized for data-intensive LAN applications. A variety of customers have already beta tested IBM's new iSCSI appliance to assess its performance attributes and the benefits it can bring to their storage infrastructure.
"We have utilized IBM's directly attached storage technology for many years and were eager to evaluate the possibility IBM presented to us with this exciting new approach to storage networking," said Dr. Steven M. Erde, PhD., M.D., Director of Academic Computing at New York City based Weill Medical College of Cornell University. "The IP Storage 200i setup and beta testing was smooth and showed a mature product with a great Web interface for easy management. The ability to deploy directly addressable storage over our existing gigabit TCP/IP networks, means that we can implement a cost-effective SAN."
Additional IP Storage 200i beta testing was conducted by Luther College, located in Decorah, Iowa.
"The availability of SAN-quality services over IP puts complex, yet versatile storage technology within our reach," said Tom Walker, executive director of Library and Information Services at Luther College. "Throughout the beta testing of IBM's IP Storage 200i, our technicians were impressed at the ease with which storage solutions could be delivered to servers and workstations. We are confident that this product can deliver the affordable, flexible storage networking solutions we require."
In addition to the general availability of the IP storage 200i, Tivoli Systems also announced today that it will support the IP Storage 200i with Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM).
"Supporting the IP Storage 200i with the tools provided by TSM is a key 'next step' for IBM's iSCSI initiative," said Jose Iglesias VP Storage Management, Tivoli Systems "The ease with which TSM can support this new leading edge storage networking technology is also a testimony to the depth and flexibility of TSM's architecture. Tivoli's support can allow customers to enjoy further benefits by maintaining additional TSM database copies on their IP Storage 200i, and is intended to increase TSM server availability."
With prices beginning under $20,000 and capacities ranging from 108GB up to 1.74TB, the IP Storage 200i is designed to offer customers an outstanding opportunity to gain new value in managing their information assets.
