    Date added: 10 May 2011

The world's first commercial tape drive, the IBM 726 Magnetic Tape Recorder -- one of the 100 top milestone's in IBM’s century-long history -- could store two megabytes of data in 1952. IBM's newest tape drive announced today, the IBM TS1140 (top photo), can hold two million times more data than the 726. Tape storage is gaining new opportunities as a low cost, energy efficient way for companies in industries like media and entertainment and healthcare to create huge archives of digital assets and information being driven by social-networking sites, mobile devices, cloud computing and more.
