Enhancing its ability to help simplify the storage environment, the DS8300 introduces a new level of virtualization with innovative storage system logical partitioning (LPAR). This storage system LPAR technology is designed to enable the creation of two completely separate virtual storage subsystems within a single DS8300. The subsystems can be used for production, test or other unique storage environments, and they operate within a single physical enclosure. Each storage partition can be established to support the specific performance requirements of a different, heterogeneous workload. The DS8000 series system hardware-based partitioning implementation helps to isolate and protect the LPARs. These storage system LPAR capabilities are designed to help improve management efficiency, cost effectiveness and flexibility.
World-class performance to maximize responsiveness in today's on demand world
The DS8000 series is designed to deliver a new standard in high performance---helping organizations process, store and retrieve data more quickly. Its innovative design incorporates a high bandwidth and fault-tolerant internal component interconnect, switched connections to internal disks, and innovative cache optimization algorithms from IBM Research. With front-end, singleport performance of up to 400 MBps (with up to four ports per host adapter), and blazing back-end performance, the DS8000 series is designed to deliver greater total throughput for typical production workloads, such as the SPC-1 benchmark from the Storage Performance Council. Moreover, in the DS8000, data is striped across multiple physical disks to help minimize disk "hot spots" and reduce the need for manual tuning.
In addition to high-performance processors in its internal host and device adapters, the DS8000 includes a design that provides two shared pools of processors that can be applied to many tasks inside the system, accelerating response times to give users fast access to information. The DS8000 series uses 64-bit IBM POWER5™ microprocessors in dual 2-way (for the DS8100) or dual 4-way (for the DS8300) shared SMP processor complexes. And for even greater performance for transaction processing workloads, the DS8000 Turbo models include an updated IBM POWER5+™ processor feature that can enable up to 15% improvement in I/O operations per second compared to previous DS8000 models.
Cache efficiency can help to greatly improve I/O performance and reduce the overall cache requirements. The DS8000 series systems can be equipped with up to 256 GB of cache to help support high-capacity workloads. The caching algorithms in the DS8000 series are designed to dynamically and adaptively self-tune to continually optimize for the current workload. This is intended to help the system deliver an unimpeded flow of data and high levels of throughput---helping to bring information to businesses and their customers smoothly and rapidly. Moreover, the cooperative caching and I/O priority functions of the DS8000 can help enable even greater cache efficiency and performance for higher priority IBM AIX® DB2® applications running on IBM System p servers. Efficient cache-space management algorithms help provide as much cache as possible to hold application data. The DS8000 also incorporates Adaptive Multistream Pre-fetching (AMP), which is breakthrough caching technology from IBM research that is designed to dramatically improve performance for sequential and batch processing applications, such as data backup, business intelligence and data warehouse workloads.
The DS8000 series delivers a variety of features designed to extend the performance in IBM System z™ environments. The most recent innovation is IBM z/OS Global Mirror Multiple Reader and Extended Distance FICON which can help to improve throughput over distance and cost effectiveness for z/OS Global Mirror. The DS8000 series also offers many other special IBM System z capabilities, like Parallel Access Volumes (PAV), HyperPAV, priority I/O queuing, Multiple Allegiance capabilities and support for the IBM System z MIDAW facility. Additionally, IBM has previewed plans to support Extended Address Volumes for z/OS with the DS8000 to enable a volume with more than 65,520 cylinders*. It is easy to see that the DS8000 is uniquely positioned to address the needs of the most demanding System z workloads. Furthermore, to facilitate rapid data transfer between the storage enclosure and the server, the DS8000 series can also support up to 128 4 Gbps Fibre Channel/FICON ports or up to 64 IBM ESCON® ports.
All of these performance enhancements can deliver tangible results: The DS8000 series systems have as much as seven times the throughput of the IBM TotalStorage® Enterprise Storage Server® (ESS) Model 800. This enables customers to buy one DS8000 series system where multiple other storage servers may have been needed in the past for similar capacity and throughput.

The DS8000 series is designed to help address the needs of on demand environments requiring the highest levels of availability. It is designed to support dynamic changes including online system microcode updates as well as online hardware upgrades. It also features redundant, hot-swappable components to help support continuous operations. All disks are RAID protected; multiple spare disks are configured to allow data on a failed RAID protected disk to be quickly and automatically rebuilt to restore fault tolerance. Local data copies
The IBM FlashCopy® feature addresses a key requirement for continuous data availability by enabling the generation of point-in-time data copies without imposing load on the application server. These copies can then be used for backup, testing or other purposes. FlashCopy is designed to enable source data to be copied to an equivalently sized target space. The full volume copies can help enable data recovery in the event of loss of the source data. When a copy of data is requested, both the source data and its copy are available for use almost immediately; data movement occurs asynchronously in the background.
In addition to being able to make a full physical copy in the background, FlashCopy also has a "no-copy" feature that is designed to reduce internal data movement overhead and can enable a quicker reuse of disk capacity that might otherwise be dedicated to copy operations for an extended period of time. With its copy-on-write capability, the only data copied is that which is about to be changed or overlaid. Copies can be made quickly, after which data can be backed up and capacity reallocated.
The IBM FlashCopy SE feature provides a space efficient snapshot capability that can greatly reduce the storage capacity needed for point-in-time copies. Only the capacity needed to save pre-change images of the source data is allocated in the copy repository. This enables more space-efficient utilization than is possible with the traditional FlashCopy function. Furthermore, less capacity can mean fewer disk drives and lower power and cooling requirements, so FlashCopy SE can help storage environments to reduce costs and complexity. FlashCopy SE may be especially useful in the creation of temporary copies for tape backup, online application checkpoints or copies for disaster recovery testing.
In today's highly competitive and realtime environment, supporting the highest level of application availability can be vital to business success. The DS8000 series remote mirroring and copy functions---IBM System Storage Metro Mirror, Global Mirror and Global Copy are designed to create mirrors of application data at remote sites that are cities or continents away, enabling synchronous copies between sites of up to 300 kilometers apart and asynchronous copies over virtually unlimited distances.
High-speed data transfers help keep data up-to-date and allow it to be retrieved rapidly. Global Mirror is designed to help maintain data currency at the remote site within a few seconds of the local site, regardless of distance. It includes exceptional capabilities, such as self-managed crosssystem data consistency groups, which help protect data integrity for large applications across a wide variety of flexible system configurations. In addition, Global Mirror configurations incorporate comprehensive data integrity protection at the remote site; this helps reduce risk during resynchronization of data between sites after temporary link outages or other outages. The DS8000 also supports a three-site IBM System Storage Metro Mirror/Global Mirror solution to help enable even greater protection from unexpected site outages.
These copying and mirroring capabilities are designed to help give users constant access to critical information during both planned and unplanned outages. To help increase flexibility and investment protection, these functions are compatible with those of the IBM System Storage DS6000™ series and the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) Models 800 and 750. Additionally, available separately, IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Replication software is a tool that can significantly help simplify the management, automation and monitoring of these DS8000 mirroring and replication functions.

Utilizing IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center Basic Edition software, SSPC extends the capabilities available through the IBM DS Storage Manager. SSPC offers the unique capability to manage a variety of storage devices connected across the storage area network (SAN). The rich, user-friendly graphical interface provides a comprehensive view of the storage topology, from which the administrator can inspect the health of the environment at an aggregate or in-depth view.
