IBM (NYSE:IBM) today announced that it will help National Health Service Trusts in the UK provide clinicians with real-time access to patient data from multiple back-end systems, allowing them to make more informed decisions about patient care based on the very latest clinical information. The solution from IBM and Carefx will bring data together from disparate applications to offer a real-time view of patient data via a new portal.
Pilot projects have already been completed on clinical portal implementations at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, based on Carefx’ Fusionfx portal and IBM Websphere® technologies. West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust is also using the solution for its own clinical portal, which will allow clinicians at the Trust's three hospitals - Watford General, St. Albans City and Hemel Hempstead Hospitals - to benefit from streamlined, secure access to applications and patient data in real time, reducing time spent navigating between systems and applications and improving the quality, safety and efficiency of patient care.
For example, a doctor could use the solution to access information on a specific patient without opening up multiple applications or rely on paper notes. This makes it easier for clinicians to use IT resources, as well as making them more efficient in their interactions with patients.
“We are excited to join IBM in announcing that there are hospitals throughout the UK who are benefitting from joint solutions offered by IBM and Carefx. For many years, we have successfully provided clinical solutions that rely upon the strength of IBM middleware and we’re looking forward to delivering these robust, market tested solutions to meet the increasingly challenging and large-scale interoperability needs seen in the NHS,” said Wayne Parslow, Executive Vice-President and General Manager EMEA for Carefx.
Robert Tickell, IBM UK Healthcare Business Leader, added: “Clinicians need accurate up-to-date information about their patients as they see them or when they are making important decisions about their care. Working together, IBM and Carefx are able to offer a portal solution that brings together patient data from a range of sources, making it more accessible to the clinician and enabling better decision making.”
IBM and Carefx will work closely with health care application providers and systems integrators to deliver clinical portals to NHS Trusts across the UK. Based on Fusionfx, clinicians will be able to access patient data in one place. Data is delivered from the individual applications that hold patient information based on open standards and to meet existing information governance and security requirements.
The IBM and Carefx portal solution is built on the IBM Health Integration Framework, an integrated platform for healthcare operations based on industry standards. This framework uses elements of IBM's entire software portfolio including WebSphere®, Rational®, Tivoli®, Lotus® and Information Management products while using the full range of IBM Systems and Storage technologies and the industry-specific offerings and consulting expertise of IBM Global Business Services.
