IBM UK programmes to encourage STEM

Video Interview: John Mclean

John McLean, IBM Vice President of WebSphere Development & Hursley Laboratory Director, recently spoke to Henry Tucker MBCS about various software projects at IBM, finding the right people to work at IBM, computing in schools, the cloud and how he perceives the IT industry will develop over the coming years.

According to IBM's 2012 Tech Trends Report only one out of 10 organizations think they have the skills they need to apply business critical technology. IBM's Jim Corgel Discusses the Technology Skill Gap.

Paul Martynenko, IBM - Vice President and Technical Executive, speaks about IT Professionalism:

XploreIT - 27 June and 28 June 2012

The Xplore IT event is aimed at children in Year 5 of primary school (9 to 10 year olds) and will see 72 children from 12 local schools visit IBM's laboratory in Hursley, near Winchester, on each of two days - 16th and 17th June. The children will take part in a range of activities that aim to show that science, and particularly IT, can be fun and enjoyable.

Smarter Planet for Schools

Students participate in activities based on Smarter Planet. This year, the topic was a Smarter House theme. Four schools took part in the pilot and 2 IBMers were assigned to each school. They were given the project outline and then worked with the schools weekly to come up with a final presentation. On the finals day competition, all the schools arrived and had a tour of Hursley and had to give a dragons den style panel their presentations.
