On Monday 29 November 2010, IBM launched its first-ever apprentice scheme aimed at individuals who are keen to dive straight into the world of work. The scheme was launched at IBM South Bank by John Hayes, Minister for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, Stephen Leonard, Chief Executive, IBM UK and Ireland and Christine Wyatt, General Manager, Global Business Services, IBM UK and Ireland.
At the launch IBM and Mr Hayes welcomed the first ever set of apprentices into IBM's business consulting unit where they will spend two years working in a fast-paced business environment and gain a wealth of new skills and knowledge to start building their career. The apprentices will also get the opportunity to continue their learning by working towards the Advanced Apprenticeship for IT Professionals qualification.
At the launch Mr Hayes said: "IBM’s new apprentices will gain invaluable skills that will help them take forward their own careers in the ICT sector. And every firm that makes this investment in its people will help ensure its future prosperity as well as that of the wider economy.
Stephen Leonard, General Manager, IBM UK and Ireland said: “IBM is continually looking to develop and invest in its future leaders and the Apprenticeship Scheme is a great opportunity to engage with a new pool of talent. We recognise that studying for a university degree isn't for everyone. The scheme is a way for individuals who are keen to dive straight into the world of work to join a vibrant and forward thinking company whilst still working for a recognised qualification.”
