David Stokes is the Chief Executive for IBM in the UK and Ireland where he leads IBM’s overall business and is responsible for a workforce of around 20,000 people.
David has had an extensive international career in IBM which began in his native Australia. Since becoming an IBM UK employee in 1994, he has held a number of business leadership positions based in Paris, London, Shanghai and Prague.
Prior to his current role, David was the General Manager for IBM's business in Central and Eastern Europe - part of IBM's Growth Markets Unit. In this role he was responsible for 30 countries in the region and a business partner network of over 3000 companies. Central to this role was helping to advance economic development in the region through the application of IBM's Smarter Planet Agenda to both government and private enterprises.
David has also held senior management positions in IBM's Software Group – he led the launch and development of IBM's WebSphere family of middleware in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and later the integration of the Lotus acquisition into IBM in EMEA. In both of these roles he worked with large European and global clients across several industries to develop different aspects of their technology infrastructure strategies.
Subsequently, David held senior leadership roles in General Business in IBM's operations in the UK, Ireland and South Africa where he worked with mid sized enterprises to deliver client value through the development of marketplace ecosystems.
David holds a 1st Class Honours Degree (University Medal) from the University of Sydney and lives in the UK with his wife and two children.
