Sydney, NSW, Australia - 29 May 2014: The IBM (NYSE: IBM) 'Heart of the City' installation at this year's Vivid Sydney is using data analytics to map and visualise the real-time movement of festival attendees with WiFi devices walking around the 40-plus installations along the Vivid Light Walk precinct.

At the IBM installation in Circular Quay, festival goers can view live data highlighting the busiest areas, key destinations and average time spent viewing the installations in the Vivid Light Walk precinct. This real-time information can help visitors navigate their journey on the ground and also provides valuable insights for festival organisers.

Over the 18 days of the Vivid Sydney festival, IBM Interactive is showcasing the possibilities of location-based services technology, leveraging cloud delivered IBM Presence Zones software supported by specialised WiFi infrastructure from business partner Ruckus Wireless. By detecting and analysing the wireless signal data coming from smartphones along the Vivid Light Walk precinct, the technology can display the number of attendees with WiFi enabled devices and their movements at the IBM installation.

"Today’s cities are bustling, exciting and packed full of a diverse range of people. But underneath is a complex system of infrastructure and operations," said Glen Thomas, Vice President of Marketing and Communications, IBM Australia and New Zealand. "The opportunity now exists for organisations to connect and better understand the relationships between these systems using advanced technologies, like analytics. For example, understanding how visitors move around large-scale public events can help organisers better plan to enhance visitor experiences."

“Vivid Sydney is not only amazing from the outside, with its stunning light installations and 3D projections, but is amazing from the inside, with the technology not only powering Vivid Light, but also bringing innovation such as this IBM installation to the Festival,” said Sandra Chipchase, CEO Destination NSW.
