IBM launches Portable Modular Data Centre in Australia

Brisbane, Australia - 13 Oct 2010: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced the Australian launch of its Portable Modular Data Centre (PMDC), a compact, portable, fully functional and high-density capable data centre ‘in-a-box’. The solution is designed for organisations requiring immediate additional computing capacity in remote or temporary locations, such as mining and resource companies.

Housed within a 6.1 metre standard ISO shipping container, the PMDC allows organisations to avoid unnecessary costs, time and space required to build a new facility, often at short notice. The fully customisable, insulated and environmentally sealed containers can be designed, built, shipped and deployed into any environment anywhere in the world within 12 to 14 weeks. Its flexibility means the
PMDC can act as a remote data centre, temporary data centre, mobile data centre, private or public cloud data centre environments.

Unlike similar competitive offerings, IBM’s PMDC solution supports multiple technology and facilities infrastructure vendors, and offers organisations a reduction in energy consumption by as much as 50 per cent compared to accommodating IT systems within a traditional data centre facility. Featuring complete physical infrastructure including power and cooling systems and remote monitoring, the PMDC has all the elements of secure operating environments found in traditional “raised-floor” data centres, including protection from fire, smoke, humidity, condensation and temperature changes. All IT equipment contained within the PMDC can be easily serviced and maintained from within a closed, physically secure and environmentally tight container.

David Yip, ANZ Leader, IBM Site and Facilities Services said:  “Due to its portability, security and durability, the PMDC presents an enormous opportunity in Australia for the mining industry – modern mine sites often have high IT systems requirements, but they need to operate in harsh environments and remote locations where building traditional infrastructure would be difficult and expensive.  The PMDC is environmentally robust and can withstand rain, hail, dust and extreme temperatures.  Importantly, unlike competitor offerings, the PMDC can be maintained without the need to expose the PMDC’s internal IT systems to damaging external conditions.”

Other PMDC features include:

“The containerised data centre market continues to develop with clients asking more knowledgeable questions and identifying better use cases,” said Michael Hogan, Global Offering Manager, IBM Site and Facilities Services. “Many organisations, particularly those in the mining and resources sector, require immediate expanded data processing capabilities and cannot wait up to two years for construction to be completed. The IBM PMDC alleviates the barriers presented by time and location by offering an immediate, secure and portable solution that answers expanded data centre space and capability requirements more cost-effectively and within a matter of weeks.”

PMDCs are also suitable for other pop-style organisations such as the film industry, financial services and emergency services that require instant support for space, an additional data centre or disaster recovery capability quickly and at a significantly lower cost than building a new data centre.

Three separate PMDC solutions will be available immediately in Australia, including:
