IBM Announces Natural Resources Solution Centre for Mining, LNG & Petroleum Industries

Sydney, Australia - 08 Jun 2010: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it will establish a Natural Resources Solution Centre (NRSC) in Perth to help mining, LNG and petroleum companies accelerate the development and adoption of innovative technologies and business strategies.

The IBM Natural Resources Solution Centre (NRSC) will focus on reducing exploration and operational and costs; creating financial and operational efficiencies; and improving workplace health and safety through smarter solutions such as integrated operations and asset lifecycle management. This is the sixth IBM Centre of Excellence globally focused on solutions for LNG and upstream petroleum operations and the first IBM Centre of Excellence focused on creating solutions for the mining industry.

“The NRSC will bring together IBM experts with local clients, industry, tertiary institutions and strategic business partners to create ground-breaking world class solutions,” said John Brantley, general manager for IBM’s Chemicals and Petroleum industry. “IBM plans to invest in these key industries and will look for research collaboration opportunities within its global network to bring the best of the company’s deep industry expertise to Perth.”

Industry and R&D Engagement

IBM has commenced discussions with the WA R&D community including the Western Australian Energy Research Alliance (WA:ERA). IBM will develop innovative solutions in the areas of production optimisation, carbon management and containment solutions for the benefit of Australia and the global industry.

“The IBM NRSC’s mission fits directly with our research strengths of earth and resource sciences, carbon storage and geo-thermal energy,” said Mark Stickells, chief executive for WA:ERA. “We welcome the establishment of the IBM NRSC in Perth. This builds on local research strengths and capabilities, thus reinforcing WA’s growing reputation as an important regional centre and innovative R&D hub for the upstream petroleum and LNG industry.”

Another major provider of technology solutions to the LNG, petroleum and mining industries, Honeywell Process Solutions, has welcomed news of the IBM NRSC.

“Honeywell has worked with IBM and our mutual Resources Industry clients around the world. We have staged Honeywell systems at the IBM Dallas Global Solutions Center, which show how real-time process information can be used outside the control room to drive safer, more reliable and more efficient operations. We welcome IBM bringing this level of collaboration capability to Western Australia,” said Tony Cosgrove, Pacific General Manager, Honeywell Process Solutions.

About NRSC

The NRSC center will be located within IBM’s Hay Street offices and leverage IBM’s annual global R&D budget of US$6 billion which includes investment in the development of smarter planet natural resources sector solutions such as IBM’s Intelligent Oilfields.

IBM will officially launch its Perth NRSC later this year with a celebratory event for clients, industry, government and academic leaders.
