Sydney, Australia - 26 Jun 2009: IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today that the second annual “Master the Mainframe” competition is underway. The competition, open to full-time or part-time undergraduate university students 18 years or older and residing in Australia, is designed to familiarize students with concepts for the growing large enterprise computing industry and build mainframe skills, enabling them to become the business and IT leaders of tomorrow.
The competition is comprised of three challenges which become increasingly more difficult as the contestant moves on to the next level. The students, who are provided remote access to the contest IBM Mainframe on registration, are asked to become familiar with and operate the mainframe user interface, perform systems programmer-type tasks and complete real-life situations encountered by experienced systems programmers.
The competition runs from May 4, 2009 and will close on July 31, 2009 at 11:59 p.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time. Prizes range from T-shirts to Apple iPod Shuffles with the overall winner being awarded a trip to Perth, Western Australia to visit IBM’s Australia Development Laboratory. The winners will be announced via email within 2 months of the competition completion date of July 31, 2009.
The “Master of the Mainframe” competition is part of IBM's Academic Initiative for System z program, a global project by IBM to align with colleges, universities and businesses to develop mainframe and large enterprise skills for future employment and Fortune 500 companies across the globe. The Academic Initiative for System z program has now worked with more than 600 colleges and universities across the globe to help train and educate more than 50,000 students.
