Sydney, Australia - 15 Jun 2009: IBM Australia today announced the launch of its new Virtual Server Recovery (VSR) and Information Protection Service (IPS) offering – a grassroots solution that has been researched and developed in Australia for local businesses. The solution offers customers dedicated backup and recovery resources on IBM’s shared recovery platform, with up to 80 percent faster recovery times at 15-40 percent less cost than traditional remote data protection methods. With this new service, IBM now offers the widest range of data recovery options for businesses in Australia.
“While the technology of the offering reflects current industry standards, the way in which this technology is being offered sets IBM apart from other vendors,” said IBM’s Business Continuity and Recovery Services (BCRS) executive Andrew Fry. “The solution is particularly relevant for SMEs, manufacturing and distribution companies that require a backup and recovery solution that will recover mission-critical information in the event of a system outage, ensuring that their business stays up and running in all situations,” he added.
Using the IBM shared recovery platform, IBM manages the underlying infrastructure and allocates the required resources (CPU, Memory and Disk) to a client account on the system. Management of this resource is then passed to the client so they can adjust system requirements as needed. This can be managed via remote connectivity or by visiting the IBM recovery centre.
“Under this model, IBM manages all of the client’s hardware and software costs, along with future capacity planning, the client only pay a monthly fee for the allocated resources. Additional capacity is available and is easily allocated. The key features and benefits of the solution are ideal for SMEs, manufacturing and distribution companies,” said Mr Fry.
“Combining the benefits of IBM’s VSR with our existing IPS came from the understanding that in today’s fast-paced business environment many organisations cannot handle an outage for longer than 24 hours, and some even less than that. Traditionally implementing a solution with a shorter Recovery Time Objective (RTO) has been cost prohibitive. Together, VSR and IPS can provide faster recovery of server images and their application data, as a pay-as-you-go service,” said Mr Fry.
To address this gap in the market, IBM’s local BCRS team in Australia worked with VMWare® to create a recovery service that would reduce RTOs and offer all the benefits of a virtualised environment in a disaster scenario without the associated high price tag.
“Because IBM manages the underlying infrastructure, it means our clients do not have any capital or ongoing maintenance frustrations, giving them the best of both worlds,” said Mr Fry.
