Sydney, Australia - 03 Jun 2009: IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today that the Australian Department of Defence has signed an agreement with IBM. This standing offer will facilitate, in part, consolidation and standardisation of its ICT infrastructure. The agreement, signed in March 2009, is for the provision of x86 servers and associated services. The agreement is anticipated to run for a minimum of two years, with an option to extend to four years.
The Department of Defence publicly released an open competitive tender in 2007 and selected IBM.
"IBM is committed to investing and delivering leading server technology to optimise Defence's corporate, war fighter and intelligence functions," said Murray Bruce, General Manager, Defence & National Security, IBM Australia. "Today's public sector environment needs smarter servers for a more dynamic infrastructure - one that can lower ownership costs with higher performance, simplify management and increase utilisation, and enable new paradigms such as cloud computing."
IBM will work in partnership with Defence to rationalise its server fleet. This will include the use of IBM professional services assisting with everything from provisioning new servers, server build, install and migration, through to end-of-life server disposal. IBM will also provide maintenance and support for existing server fleets, as well as training for Defence personnel on IBM System x servers and IBM Systems Director, its hardware management toolset.
In the Defence White Paper "Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific Century: Force 2030" released earlier this month, Defence highlighted that its "ICT reform program will deliver business efficiencies and lower costs in Defence's information and communications technologies."
IBM's embedded Programme Management Office based in Canberra will assist the department to consolidate its server fleet over the life of the agreement. Based on IBM's leading server technology, the team will build a more dynamic infrastructure to support the organisation's goals of improved sustainability and capacity. IBM will leverage its significant skills, knowledge and experience of similar transformational projects inside other public sector organisations. It also marks a deepening of its existing relationship with the Department of Defence, following an earlier contract signed in 2008 to provide three mainframe computers and associated software.
