Tourcast: Golf fans cheer on demand success
How do you make golf enthusiasts happy? For the PGA TOUR, the answer is to provide them with TOURCast, a real-time event service that provides fans with unprecedented access to golf events online.

TOURCast demo
TOURCast enables fans to: Customize their tournament experience to watch favorite players or holes; enhance their experience by getting more information on a shot, hole or player; analyze a hole or a player’s performance; and compare players head-to-head on the actual holes played.

The challenge of demand
Launching TOURCast, however, created a challenge: how to host a rich, interactive, visual experience that could scale, on demand, to support the dynamic traffic patterns of popular events. That requirement, and the additional need to proactively increase capacity, led PGA TOUR to IBM, their Official Technology Partner, and IBM Managed Hosting - Linux virtual services.
The challenge of demand
IBM Managed Hosting - Linux virtual services allows organizations to draw on managed server capacity - without the expense of buying the physical hardware. Instead of the myriad physical servers (Web, database and application) your business relies on now, you can leverage virtual servers on IBM zSeries™ running Linux. Availability and reliability are enhanced. Your IT infrastructure is simplified. And extra capacity is easily added as demand peaks or processing, storage and network needs grow..

A revolution in service
TOURCast is a revolutionary service. As a result, adoption and usage were difficult to predict and further complicated by the inherent traffic fluctuations driven by tournament scheduling. These factors demanded an infrastructure that could seamlessly and cost-effectively deliver TOURCast under any usage scenario.

However, IBM Managed Hosting - Linux virtual services allows customers to purchase processing power on demand by the "service unit" (service units are based on a customer's anticipated demand and equate to the processing power utilized.) PGA TOUR was thus able to invest in a minimum level of capacity and then, as projected demand became reality, easily purchase more. Their system is a common, user-friendly Linux server, but one that has tremendous capacity and is fully managed by IBM. There is no need to over-deploy capacity and PGA TOUR avoids wasting money on unused capacity.
