Yekaterina MenovchshikovaLinux in Growth Markets: The Kazakhstan Experience
Wednesday, October 26, 2011
17:15 – 18:15
Room: Aquarius

Presenter:
Yekaterina Menovchshikova
Program Coordinator at Linux Center Kazakhstan, IBM Sales & Distribution

Abstract:

Kazakhstan is one of the lesser known emerging markets, yet it is the 9th largest nation in the world, bigger in size than Western Europe and with a strong economy thanks to it's vast oil and gas resources. Like many emerging markets, Kazakhstan faces the ambitious task of growing and enhancing its IT infrastructure rapidly to match the demands of a new economy. Kazakhstan's IT infrastructure however is not mature, with a lag of about 3 to 5 years in software adoption; virtualization and cloud computing are just getting started. Traditionally there has been a high level of piracy of commercial software. The Kazakhstan government is making efforts to force copyright law and encourage OSS usage in government and educational organizations, yet one of the main challenges is a lack of knowledge and experience with Linux and OSS. As a result only a few local companies offer Linux-based solutions. In this session we will talk about IBM's experience with Linux-based projects in Kazakhstan, and we will discuss best practices and lessons learned. This session will be especially of interest to companies that want to enter the Kazakhstan market and gain a strong foothold there with their Linux based solutions.

Richard MooreThe Brand New Software Development Kit for Linux on POWER
Thursday, October 27, 2011
16:00 – 17:00
Room: Leo

Presenter:
Richard Moore
Open Source Software Developer, IBM Sales & Distribution

Abstract:

IBM has recently released a brand new Eclipse-based SDK for Linux on POWER. If you are at all interested in developing for POWER you need to be aware of what's been put into this SDK. This just what will be discussed in this talk. Performance under POWER can be impressive, especially under the recent P7 processor. To exploit the best from your P7 you'll need to have the right versions of the development tools and use the right parameters. The IBM SDK pulls all of this neatly together under one development framework. Not only do you get the usual convenience of source code and project management but you also have integrated some of the most powerful analytical tools available to the developer. And some of these - FDPR - uniquely exploit the POWER architecture. Get the low down on what cool and new for POWER development in this talk.

Abstract:

The key to successful virtualization deployment is its management. The IBM Compute Cloud and many private clouds being built today are based on KVM. Since KVM is an open source hypervisor there is also a choice in management tools. This talk will focus on management of KVM via open source projects and closed source products. It is geared to IT Administrators and Operations Experts intending to deploy KVM based environments.
