Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and IBM:
Flexibility, Stability and New Technologies

Today, Red Hat announced the latest version of their flagship Red Hat Enterprise Linux product – positioned as the foundation for open hybrid clouds. I wanted to share with you why we think Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 is significant for Red Hat, for IBM, and most importantly, for our joint clients.

IBM and Red Hat have been partners for 15 years, building on a shared commitment to open computing, a common focus on enterprise quality computing, and active participation in joint open source community projects such as Linux, KVM and OpenStack.

We are now going through an era of massive innovation, with new workloads such as Big Data, mobile and social driving radical change in applications, and the new delivery models of private, public and hybrid clouds driving similar change in how those applications are delivered.

Meanwhile, the core enterprise data and applications which underpin every business are just as important, but are now expected to be available and accessible 24x7 to support the new workloads.

Linux is at the center of all of these new workloads, offering the foundation for cloud computing and providing the link between the new systems of engagement and traditional systems of record.

The combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and IBM systems and software delivers the flexibility, stability and new technologies needed to make this a reality.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 offers the flexibility of physical, virtual and cloud deployment across the whole range of IBM systems – System x, Power Systems and System z. Together they enable new workloads such as Big Data and analytics by providing support for multi-threading, wide data paths, and large file systems. Virtualization can significantly reduce costs, with support ranging from KVM on both Power and System x, to running new Linux workloads alongside existing operating environments on System z and Power.

Enterprise Linux applications need rock-solid stability, security and scalability, whether on-premise or delivered as a service through the cloud. IBM’s reliability throughout our range of servers and storage combines with the trusted platform of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and the mandatory access control of SELinux to provide this - however large or small the IT installation.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 includes the Linux 3.10 kernel and a range of exciting new technologies, including Linux containers which offer a lightweight alternative to encapsulating applications and their supporting infrastructure. It supports the latest IBM server technology, including the X6 architecture of System x, the POWER8 processor inside Power Systems, and the latest members of the System z family: IBM zEnterprise® EC12 and IBM zEnterprise BC12.

In summary, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 offers a common enterprise Linux operating system across System x, Power Systems and System z; it enables flexibility of deployment, portability of applications and sharing of skills; and it exploits the underlying performance, security and reliability of IBM systems to optimize new workloads alongside existing systems of record.
