Virtualization

Roland-Garros 2009. Efficiency in performance

Virtualisation

VirtualisationSince 2006, infrastructure has been highly optimized to achieve more with less. We have consolidated from 60 servers to 6 servers – Visits have grown by 26% and the cost/visit has been reduced by 38% over the same period.

A dynamic infrastructure leverages virtualization, energy efficiency, standardization and automation to free up operational budget for new investment.

A dynamic infrastructure increases flexibility, improves resilience, lowers cost and improves time-to-market .

Cloud computing

It’s an infrastructure management methodology; a way to manage large numbers of highly virtualized resources. This transparent access to computing resources allows to have an infrastructure over 3 hosting locations requiring only 150% of the technological capacities versus the 200% previously necessary.

How do you cope with web traffic that’s 100x the year-round traffic?

Like all Grand Slam sites, RolandGarros.com must meet the expectations of millions of fans who flood the site at tournament time - but without the year-round expense of a vast infrastructure. To complement the existing systems, IBM designed and implements a virtualisation solution over geographically dispersed sites. By virtualising them as one during the tournament, they easily handle the huge peaks in traffic.

In 2008, rolandgarros.com recorded 35 million visits, an increase of 31% compared to 2007.
