Innovating for the Future: The Energy & Utilities Project

The eighth annual volume of thought leadership published by Montgomery Research Inc. and IBM

Innovating for the Future
Another year has passed, and the drive for innovation in the utilities industry is accelerating, with a particular focus on increasing the interactions among all points in the utility network—from generation to transmission and distribution systems and on to customers. In fact, we expect customers to increasingly drive innovation in utilities, just as they have done in telecommunications, media and entertainment, and other technology-driven industries. With rising energy prices, increased environmental concerns and the trend toward greater customer interaction and control that other industries have pioneered, the stage is set for utility customers to demand better service.

This book continues our effort to provide the utilities industry with a broad range of perspectives, with sections covering innovation in customers and markets, operations, strategy/finance and technology. We’re excited by the developments in the industry that this book highlights, and we think that in the next few years utilities will continue to innovate to help address climate change; assist customers in controlling their energy costs; improve the quality of service; adapt to changes in the generation technologies; and drive profitable growth.

Montgomery Research Inc. recently published Volume 8 of its Energy & Utilities Project, which focuses on how utility companies can innovate for the future. IBM authored a number of articles in the book that provide fresh thinking from a range of perspectives. Following are two articles from “Innovating for the Future” authored by IBM energy and utilities experts that you can download for review:

The Customer-Focused Utility (181KB)
by Bob Brnilovich
Meeting Future Utility Operating Challenges with a Smart Grid (207KB)
by Stephen Callahan
