Begin your transformation to IMS
|
IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) was defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP and 3GPP2) and is being adapted for cable through CableLab’s PacketCable 2.0 specification. IMS and PacketCable 2.0 expands opportunities for an enterprise to have greater collaboration with telecom and cable industries by: -
Enabling service providers to deploy new multimedia services.
-
Simplifying the network architecture by moving to IP and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) as a basis of any communication.
-
Facilitating fixed-mobile convergence.
The IMS solution from IBM can help you begin your transformation to this next-generation network architecture. A proof of concept built by IBM can help your company see first hand the potential business benefits of this transition. -
Efficiently integrate composite services with back-end support systems to streamline provisioning, activation and other key telecom business processes.
-
Speed time to market of revenue-generating services with a unified service creation environment that supports management of the complete service lifecycle across multiple toolsets—leverage the insight gained to make changes early in the process and choose the right services based on expected ROI and value.
-
Accelerate service delivery with common, standards-based tooling and deployment environments—services can now be enhanced to support specific marketing campaigns and rapidly developed to reflect changing market needs.
-
Utilize a single, consistent interface for delivery of customized content across multiple devices.
-
Monitor and manage composite service execution to maintain service-level agreements and user satisfaction.
-
Scale and adapt infrastructure quickly and efficiently using a modular and open standards based blade server platform.
-
Easily and reliably deploy new rich multimedia applications, such as location based services, interactive gaming, personalized programming, business messaging and Virtual Private Network (VPN) services, combining interactive voice and data functionality.

Business case shows potential for cost savings
|
IBM assessed the business case for IP Multimedia Subsystem from an operator's point of view. We used a “generic” European operator with around 15 million subscribers as the basis for the case. Results showed:
-
IMS-enabled services are likely to generate sufficient revenue to cover the incremental capital expenses and operating expenses of developing the services, resulting in positive cash flow per user per year.
-
The majority of additional IMS costs are variable—only relatively small upfront costs need to be recovered.
-
Next-generation network investments relating to IMS give the operator opportunity to reduce costs across the entire customer base.
