Mobile combat forces collaboration solution from IBM

Executive summary Department view Technical details
The goal
Improve operational readiness
Could you improve operational readiness if your units had an informal way to get answers, find experts, work together and make decisions faster and more effectively? Mobile combat forces collaboration solutions from IBM can help enable your forces to speed communications by allowing individuals to initiate instant messaging sessions directly from within applications and documents.

The advantage
Government and industry working together
Mobile combat forces collaboration solutions from IBM can be rapidly deployed using commercial hardware, software and services. Our solutions have proven themselves as robust and flexible in the challenging narrowband network environment for the mission critical command and control of U.S. and coalition forces in Operation Enduring Freedom. We have deployed collaboration solutions for many coalition forces, including:
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Germany

We deploy our solutions on highly reliable and security-rich technology platforms:
  • Lotus® Domino™ from IBM—more than 68 million people use Lotus Domino because it offers a virtual realtime collaboration toolset.
  • Sametime® from IBM—runs on top of almost any operating system and can help instantly link coalition forces with simple browser access.

The benefits
Collaboration among common peer groups
In an example of how our solution could benefit your forces: One of your machinists, while installing new equipment, has difficulty. With our solution he could quickly send his questions to others who can answer him in virtual realtime. With mobile combat forces collaboration solutions from IBM your forces can promote communications among common occupation groups.

Our solutions provide the platform to help allow your defense organization to:
  • Enable online meetings between approved users; meetings can be password-protected with restricted invitee lists.
  • Send information over a narrow bandwidth satellite with encrypted data to protect tactical information from unauthorized viewing.
  • Allow hundreds of people to view the same application or presentation whiteboard to help ensure your forces are tactically on the same page.
  • Send and receive text messages in real time with online counterparts.
  • Share information with team member exchange, such as unique sensor imagery, air plans, maps of objective areas and application sharing

The approach
IBM and U.S. Navy deploys collaboration at sea
In January 2000, the U.S. Navy implemented collaboration at sea solutions from IBM, using Domino and Sametime for a deploying Carrier Battle Group. Because of its positive impact on fleet command and control efficiency, the Chief of Naval Operations made the decision to rapidly implement the solution in all Carrier Battle Groups and Amphibious Ready Groups by Spring of 2000. The solution today has created a global, classified, Sametime network using the fleet’s satellite communications network so that anyone on a U.S. Navy ship at sea virtually anywhere in the world can be aware of who is online on another ship at sea.

The financial advantage
The most out of your investment
Mobile combat forces collaboration solutions from IBM can help you reduce costs:
  • Improve productivity and reduce workloads by improving knowledge sharing between ships.
  • Reduce shipping cost and redundant spare parts orders.
  • Locate local maintenance experience rather than bearing the expense of flying high-priced experts from the continental United States to remote deployment areas.
