The benefits
Benefit from advanced research technology
With high-performance computing solutions, we provide the ability to apply advanced technology to perform more calculations faster and tackle problems of greater complexity—all without the worry of overwhelming your system. With HPC solutions from IBM, your academic research institution can build a system that can:
  • Enable an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to perform numerically intensive and complex computing tasks.
  • Enable and accelerate valuable scientific and engineering research by leveraging large-scale computing, data management and communications capabilities with current advances in algorithms, analytic methods, modeling and simulation, visualization and software infrastructures.
  • Improve speed and flexibility when responding to planned or unplanned peak workloads and time-sensitive experiments.
  • Be managed from a single point of control.
  • Provide high levels of performance and availability, as well as horizontal scaling.
  • Tap extra computing capacity on demand, when and if required.
  • Increase IT asset utilization and research operational efficiency.
  • Operate conservatively within an ever-tightening environmental and energy envelope.

The approach
Successful implementations
IBM collaborated with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and the State of New York to establish the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI). The mission of this US$100 million partnership is to advance semiconductor technology to the nanoscale, while enabling key nanotechnology innovations in the fields of energy, biotechnology, arts and medicine. The core computation resources for the center are a large IBM Blue Gene®/L system and a large Linux cluster with the supporting IBM HPC software infrastructure.

The University of Toronto, working with a regional health network, needed to develop a new infrastructure for large-scale and timely analysis of data for improved diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Working within fiscal constraints and limited resources, the university elected to address its challenge with an integrated, automated, end-to-end solution from IBM that dynamically optimizes the use of IT resources. This implementation has delivered improved server utilization, reduced IT administration costs and most importantly, improved dynamic delivery of IT resources as professionals need them.

The financial advantage
Accomplish more in less time
With HPC solutions from IBM, your higher learning institution’s research departments can:
  • Enhance their productivity by conducting more calculations and completing simulations faster.
  • Move research forward quickly, helping to save money on resources.
  • Increase your chances for more research funding by using leading-edge technology which can enable the opportunity for more scientific breakthroughs.
  • Improve use of environmental and energy resources.
