Creating the Sakai 2.1.2 EAR File for IBM WebSphere Community Edition

IBM WebSphere® Application Server is a high-performance and extremely scalable transaction engine for dynamic e-business applications. The Open Services Infrastructure allows companies to deploy a core operating environment that works as a reliable foundation capable of handling high volume secure transactions and Web services. WebSphere continues the evolution to a single Web services-enabled, Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application server and development environment that addresses the essential elements needed for an on demand operating environment.

The WebSphere Community Edition (WASCE) is a free J2EE container and Web application server based on Apache Geronimo and Tomcat. There is also an Eclipse plug-in for WASCE which allows anyone to run and code using WASCE without leaving the Eclipse IDE.

The good news is that anyone can download, install, and use WASCE and the Eclipse plug-in at no charge. And since WASCE is a supported IBM product, you’ll have the option to purchase support for WASCE from IBM.

This document describes how you can use Eclipse to deploy Sakai 2.1.2 on a WASCE server. It does not describe how to create a full Sakai development environment; hopefully we will address this in the near future.
