In May 1997, millions of chess fans watched in fascination as a system called IBM Deep
Watson plays Jeopardy!
To be successful on the game show Jeopardy! a contestant has to possess an enormous range of knowledge, the ability to understand wordplay,and the agility to dig out an answer quickly. Researchers at the Watson Research Center created a question answering technology that put this assumption to the test, combining natural language processing, information retrieval, machine learning, knowledge representation and reasoning, and massively parallel computation to create a system that can compete with the best human performance.
