The merchandise scanner in IBM's supermarket checkout station of 1973...

The merchandise scanner in IBM's supermarket checkout station of 1973 incorporated a spinning disk of 21 holographic films that functioned as glass prisms and lenses. A laser beam passing through the disk created a complex light pattern that struck the Universal Product Code stripes on merchandise held over the scanner. Light reflected from the stripes was converted by the scanner into electrical signals for computer processing. (VV3111)
